2010 in for Rear Suspension TSB

My 2010 Double Cab TRD Long Bed had bottomed out on me when I had the bed loaded up with wet soil so I called my Toyota dealer and they said "Yeah the back end is pretty weak on the Tacoma bring it in and we'll fix it."

I dropped the truck in yesterday and they are upgrading the rear springs on Toyota's dime. They even gave me a Prius as a loaner car. They couldn't have been more helpful.

They did refuse to install 5100's on the rear while it was apart (at my expense) because they don't do anything after market. A little disappointing but I can do that at a later date.

I can't wait to get the truck back and see how the new leaf pack performs.

 

Congrats on the free upgrade. Thing is I had the same problem with my 2010, so I went up there to them telling them about it and they came back said they would up upgrade mine for the small fee of $925.00 before tax!! What did you do for them to give out the upgrade under warranty.

 

Pretty much just told them the truck was bottoming out under load and asked if the rear suspension TSB applied to the 2010. You could clearly see where the rubber stop block had been hitting the frame (or whatever it hits).

The service guy asked when I could bring the truck in to have the TSB done and if I could leave it for a couple of days. I think it's the third one they've done on a 2010.

 

Do you think i could get them to approve this with an extended warranty on a 2007 with 45,000 on it?

 

you can install rear 5100's blindfolded with two hands tied behind your back.

 

I'm no expert and I know there are a lot of posts on this issue. Just wanted to relay my experience. I was very surprised how little hassle I had to go through based on others experiences.

 

Don't I need some kind of spring compressor? I'm pretty handy and can fix / build most things but have never had to do any suspension work.

 

Just picked up my truck and OMG what a difference. The ride is definitely stiffer and more truck like. It finally feels like a truck should and is going to handle a lot more weight.

Leaf pack not only has an extra leaf it is noticeably beefier.

They replaced the spring assembly and upgraded the front and rear shocks. Part #s are:

48510-09U50 Absorber Set SHO
48530-09Q40 Absorber Set SHO

Thank you to everyone on this forum that has posted on the rear suspension issue with 2nd Gen. I was going to have an add a leaf done at Les Schwab at my own expense until I learned about the TSB on this forum.

I highly recommend this to anyone that uses their truck as a truck, i.e. for hauling loads and towing etc...

 

After reading this topic and TSB i called my dealership and asked them about this suspension TSB revision, at first they had no idea what i'm talking about so after they researched it i was told that in order to do anything with my rear suspension they need to duplicate the problem and that i need to load it up and drive it to the dealership. I don't have anything to load it up with.
I told them that my truck is bottoming out under load. I noticed that when hauling sand.
They said they have nothing to load it up with as well and if they will be unable to duplicate the problem they won't do anything. They scheduled an appointment for tmrw and said they will drive it around unloaded and if they won't duplicate the issue(how could they duplicate without loading it up) they will not work on the truck.
What do you guys think about this? Are they right? Do they have to do it or is it completely up to them?

Called my dealership today and explained the whole harsh ride thing and they weren't sure my 2010 was included. I assured them it was so they said they would check and call back. A half hour later they called back said it was, I gave them my vin# and they said they would call when my parts come in. All done with a phone call, that was easy....

 

Take it in loaded and show them. Or if the "dents" are still in the bumpers, show them that also.

I had the exact same great experience with my dealer.

I read of the TSB here, and what others had done to get their dealer to install the new springs, and of others that were refused.

So, I call my dealer and fumbled through a weak explanation of why I think I needed the new springs. He said no problem and ordered the parts. I requested a loaner. When I dropped off the truck they had to teach me how to drive that darn Prius. I was mesmerized by the display of wheels/battery/power direction. Then I found the GPS. I sure wouldn't want one though.

It's been 3 or 4 months since then and the rear is still just a tiny bit higher, but I kinda like the look, so I won't bother with trying to level it out. To each his own.

 

What was your explanation? I'm trying to figure out what to tell the dealership so they will not outsmart me.

 

If I had to do it again I would say that the trucked bottomed out with a load in the back.

But, that could come back to bite you in the ass if they inspected the bump stops and they showed no sign of wear.

I just rambled on about a rough ride with stuff in the back.

My dealer really goes the extra mile when it comes to service. I'd buy there again. They are Seeger Toyota in St. Louis, MO.

I really noticed a difference while driving tightly curved entrance/exit ramps on the highway. Before the new springs the truck would really roll and wallow through a high speed corner. Now it feels real firm and no sense of rolling.
