My 2021 Tacoma accelerated on its own?!

That thread and the deleted posts in others is the result of a bunch of people fighting and arguing and generally being rude about their favorite tunes or tuner

None of which contributed to the actual potential issues that people are claiming

I must have missed that (in the first thread arguing about tunes; I thought it was pure speculation and observation about if it frequently occurred with tunes or not, which seems like a reasonable place to look). Now the remaining threads, throw em away; nothing good ever came from them. And its quite possible that I (and others) have gotten all of these threads confused and this current one is the only civil one. Either way, I'm hopeful this current thread remains informational and civil, as I'm genuinely curious why these trucks are doing this. Carry on!

I have no opinion as my truck does not stick.
But, in my opinion, these type of threads depend on hearing only the owner's opinion.
It could be a 13 yo boy just having fun on a serious topic. It could be a floor mat.
It could be anything and none of us truly know especially since it has no codes.
So then the speculation begins and we all have an opinion.

I also have no opinion, but I do have stories.

My MT mustang would also blip when I went to brake. It was so rare and sporadic that it took me three times (over the span of a year) to realize that it was blipping because I was dragging my heel. I only figured it out when I did it while barefoot and realized how often I either grazed or fat-footed the accelerator. It's surprisingly easy to do without noticing.

Also, I had a coworker who drove an MT Saturn, of all things. One day it wouldn't start and left him stranded. He had it towed in, the next morning he got on the phone within earshot of the whole office and proceeded to tear the service manager a new one over it. Made a huge show of berating this poor bastard, (which was kind of sad to watch, really). Of all the times I wish I was a fly on the wall, it would have been to see when they called him in to hand over the diagnostic report: Car won't start because the floor mats he installed at PepBoys (and subsequently that's where he was stranded) prevented the clutch from fully depressing.

Not downplaying anyone else's experiences, those just happened to be the ones I observed.

But You have it way worse. You have throttle/rev hang to deal with, reason I’d personally never own a modern Toyota manual trans. But to each their own.

No money, all went to truck...
I have MT and I think it drives wonderfully. Usually critics of the MT never actually owned an MT.

This brings up an interesting question. Let's say you get an episode of acceleration on own and you get into an accident. Would having a tune or SB or Pedal commander affect insurance coverage or have legal issues?

Never driven a newer tacoma with rev under but it’s probably something you’d get used to/ still beats the auto

I just got the overland tune this past weekend. I’ll report back after some significant mileage and compare the issue to the KDMax tune (if the TacomaWorld moderators don’t shut this thread down for a third time).

My 2021 Tacoma did this same thing when I was turning left around 15 MPH yesterday. It accelerated for a few seconds and I had to hit the brakes as there was a red light with vehicles stopped coming. I have also experienced the truck not responding when flooring the gas pedal. My Tacoma has about 14K. I love the truck and it the best truck for snowy conditions here in Washington state but it a little bit scary when it starts to accelerate on it own. I don't drive the truck that much had it since May 2021. It was purchased brand new. The floor mats were not in the way. Had a 2007 Tundra 5.7 Crewmax Limited and it never did anything like this and it was recalled for the brake override due to Toyota's vehicles in the late 2000s having acceleration issues. You think Toyota would have fix this after 15 years and a huge lawsuit due to deaths. Not capping on Toyota but there has to be a cause. I filed a complaint about this with the NHTSA, lets see if anything happens. Most likely someone has to die before anything will be recalled.

    Stuff I don't need.
I had this happen to me today. My client was in my car and watched the RPM's going up as we were driving back to the top of the mountain (fishing guide). He thought I was gassing it when I was driving up curvy roads and was concerned on my driving. So glanced over and confirmed he saw an RPM increase. I wasn't touching anything. It was quick, I though maybe I hit cruise control and then pressed the cruise control to turn it off and it turned on and RPM's kept increasing ...I saw the cruise control light turn on when I pressed it so it definitely off. Then I hit the brake twice trying not to panic and it finally subsided. I'd say maybe 10 seconds of RPM increase not pressing on anything. I have 4k miles on the truck with an OTT Tune. I have no idea what the issue is and it was scary. Maybe the tune, maybe the goblins in my seat jackers, hard to say...I'm reporting this here so that the next guy or gal who uses Google to search for this sees he/she is not alone. I don't have a solution, but at least I have it reported here.

What sucks about TacomaWorld is how people can ridicule others for trying to ask for help on an issue that is a legitimate concern. Sadly, I keep coming back to this toxic pit to find solutions to things when I see most topics end in ridicule and "I am a bigger TACO keyboard nerd than you". **insert stupid gif here**.

Anyways, if I die because of an immediate acceleration on my Tacoma with an OTT tune at 4000 miles, you can put a gif here that says "this post is worthless without pics".

BTW the search bar sucks balls. Don't ever ever ever suggest that someone use a spork to find the hidden treasure. A metal detector (google) works way better. Nerds.

Is this happening to all 3rd Gen years or just newer years? I love my truck, but I’m not going to drive something that has a mind of its own at random times.

I don't think that anyone knows what caused it. I saw some other threads from pre-2020 trucks as well. I think that it might just be an accidental cruise control hit or a sudden downshift that makes it seem like its accelerating, when in fact it's just the RPMs jumping. I don't think there's anything that is reason for major concern, yet.

Edit: Someone else said it could have been that when the truck is switched in or out of cruise control quickly the icon may go away even though it is still on. Hitting the brakes deactivates it.

It's easy, but I don't believe the tune contributed to the issue (as can be seen from multiple other discussions over the last year or so on here). Tune or not, this has occurred.

I want to say most are newer (21+) but I think I have seen a few lower years.

My 3.5 cents (inflation). Looking at TW threads, the issue has happened on trucks that are not tuned and trucks that are tuned. So, it would be logical to conclude that the problem is with Toyota software and not any tune. Keep in mind that there are millions of lines of code and thousands of different parameters in the tables that control the vehicle. If anyone has ever used Windows, they know there are bugs and strange things that happen from time to time that usually cannot be replicated. Then add in the fact that TW is a small percentage of owners, then within that the number of people having the issue who actually post something about it.

Just something to keep in mind.

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
I had it happen on my 22 and it has no tune or mods other than a set of wheels and tires. I was in traffic at a crawl and it started accelerating. I hit the brakes but it was still going so I quickly threw it in neutral where it briefly revved way up before coming back to idle. Other than the weird transmission shift patterns these trucks have that's the only issue I've had. That was a few months ago and it hasn't happened since. Not really a fan of the drive by wire throttle systems.

I guess I haven’t been paying attention because I don’t remember a bunch of sudden acceleration threads.

that's the problem with drive-by-wire. you are at the mercy of computer lag. sometimes the truck downshifts drastically and it feels like it's accelerating on it's own, but i've never had it keep revving up continuously like you are describing.
