'08 2.7 w/190k. I bought it 2 days ago and didnt even get back home before CEL came on. I'm getting p0016 and p0335. There is also a "pending" p0012. The truck runs fine as far as I can tell. I haven't noticed any performance issues, but my other truck is a RAM with a 6.4 so it's hard to tell if it's low powered or just a normal 2.7. There is a "growling" sound for about 1 second during ignition. The same sound is also noticeable when I'm coasting and then slightly press the accelerator. If I press the accelerator further the sound clears up. I'm replacing the cam sensor today. If that doesn't clear it up, what's next?

Update: I just installed the new cam sensor and reset the CEL. The light didnt come back on after driving around the block, but the "growling" sound is still there at ignition and during driving as before. We'll see.

Does it sound like the video below on a cold start especially after sitting overnight? If it does the timing chains could be getting stretched or a chain tensioner/guide may be failing.

Below video is on a GM but startup timing chain rattle sounds similar on most engines and many times indicates a worn/stretched timing chain, a broken guide, or failing tensioner.

Sounds similar but with mine it’s actually much more noticeable when the engine is up to temperature. Thanks for the help.

Interesting, timing chain noise is typically most evident on a cold start. Are you sure it's not something on the accessory drive making noise?

Update #2: CEL just came back on. Haven’t had a chance to check the codes yet. Also I’ve been able to verify that the sound I’m hearing never happens when the truck is in park/neutral, but it happens almost constantly when driving and the engine is between 1400-1800rpms. Outside of that range it’s quiet. And even when the noise is there I don’t notice any loss of power. Any ideas?

I know some people have had issues with the oil control valves on the 4.0 causing timing codes, it's possible that is the issue.
The only real way to verify timing without pulling the valve cover is with an oscilloscope.
First need to see what code(s) you have again.

I think you're right Dm93, my issue may be the oil control valve. Here are my questions: Is the oil control valve the same thing as the VVT solenoid? Does anyone know the placement of this valve?

Yes it is also called that, IRC it's on the upper left front of the engine in the side of the cylinder head.
I'm not by my PC right now to look it up.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
For the noise… check the tin heat shield mounted to the floor pan above the cat is secure

I had it up on a lift and looked at all the heat shields and exhaust hoping that was it. I’m fairly certain something is causing a timing issue. I’m planning on getting the oil control solenoid and changing it out Monday. We’ll see.
