okay first time post but here is what i got 01 tacoma 4x4 3.4 V6 automatic transmission at 246000 miles the transmission went out on me pretty good run that was three days ago will still drive lurches and lags power and wont shift all the time oil is pretty black to there is a grinding sound coming from the torque converter area mostly just when its in gear but somtimes in park also anyway trying to find a new transmission seems like most all remans have terrible reviews but maybe someone here knows a good one I checked all my local junk yards they don't have one either i would really hate to waist or total out this truck just because the transmission went out on it. i am thinking about ordering one at autozone tomorrow but would like some insite first. thanks

Try changing the black oil to a red flavor? And exchange the filter too. I guess to baby it until a tranny deal comes up?

Reman tranny from Toyota would be the best option if you still can’t find one at a junk yard

There are toyota dealers selling parts online....some of them keep the reman ones in stock....
the ones I've seen for 2wd are usually just under $2K and have $1K core charge....

You go by your Vin......I'd message some and see an ETA and total costs.....

your transmission and drive ratio is on your vin plate....

Noise from that area may be the OD planetary set. Seems like a common failure

I used this website to local a manual trans for my 98. https://www.car-part.com/. Had to travel to get it but - if you have to replace might be worth a check. In the meantime I would do what others are stating. Change fluid, filter. Cheapest route first!

Yeah an interesting thing about these transmissions is some of them last for a long long time....

however the torque convertors have a limited lifespan.......

The different fiction modifier transmisson additives try to get a little more life out of the torque convertor....

Do a pan drain and see what can be seen (if you haven't already). If you've got some nasty particles, might want to drop the pan altogether. That will tell the tale. See a bunch of chunks then you know its toast.

You could always pull the transmission and see how it looks. I mean you're going to remove it one way or the other so... Probably don't want to drive on it. If its the torque converter, it can be replaced. How's the flexplate look? Crackin' up? Let's hope not.

Another option might be to grab a low mileage A340E and swap in your 340F output shaft. It's a lot of work but if you're handy it is certainly possible.

Point is, you definitely have some options to consider. as mentioned previously, www.car-part.com is a good resource.

    Good luck.

EDIT: Reference this thread, he has a ton of good info and docs attached which will come in handy. See attached files bottom of post#1 and look for 'A340F Repair'

I started pulling it tonight got dark its pretty much ready to drop now just got to do some cosmetic stuff unplug wires get my jack where it will roll already did the hard stuff. I will see what it looks like when I pull it tomorrow it is making a a grinding/rattling noise from inside the bell housing area. Here is another thing my alternator went out the same day it started this. I know where a guy is that has a bunch of these trucks i think i am going to go see if i can find him tomorrow about getting another transmission.

If you can track down this or a similar tool, https://www.ebay.com/itm/123838226127 -- test it, you'll also need a dial gauge to check run-out.

Or you could call local transmission shops and see if you brought in the tc, if they can test it.

The A340E transmission is used in the 4x2 correct I had been wondering if I could just swap out the output of that transmission and add in my transfer case but didn't know if that would work. I just got the transmission pulled going to start working on it in a little while.

Yes, you absolutely can swap in the A340F output shaft into the 340E. @Mac. did this with his conversion recently. Its definitely a project so I wouldn't expect to be done in a day.

Some videos to review prior to starting so you have an idea of what you're getting into...

like Mike said, the output shaft swap is an option you can consider if your having better luck finding a prerunner trans. That being said, I did the swap recently and had a little trouble.

The process is pretty straight forward and with all the references above, didn’t seem too difficult. It was my first time taking a transmission apart but I felt pretty confident. However, once I got the transmission back in the truck, it was stuck forward. Something must have binded or got misaligned when I was putting it back together.

Ended up costing me a bunch more time to pull it back out and figure out what to do. So, if you have the patience and ability it might work great for you. I’ll just say, approach with caution. If I could go back I would not bothered with the output shaft swap. Though a lot of people on the forum seem to have done it and it’s worked out fine for them. This was just my experience and thought I’d share.

Okay got the pan draining now the torque converter is off makes alot of noise when you shake it don't know if that is normal or not going up to pull the pan now and go order a torque converter i have read there are two different sizes but can't find anything on that. The fluid is black but looks and feels clean.
