A lot of the uninformed think that 10 million EV's will be charging at the same time in the same area and it will be anarchy.

Actually we don’t really know until it happens. California has nearly 30 million registered on road vehicles, if those were all electric what will happen? Majority of them will charge at night, there are studies that state perhaps charging during non-peak hours isn’t the way to go, as it could turn non-peak into peak.

    https://news.stanford.edu/2022/09/22/charging-cars-home-night-not-way-go/

Their grid is already strained, during heat waves which they have made statements for people not to charge their EVs. What is going to happen when they go 100% EV?

You realize we don't have 10 million EV cars in the USA right now right? No is arguing the CURRENT STATE of the US electric grid can handle tens of millions of EV's all plugged in at once, pulling 30 plus amps each and charging at the exact same time in the same 10 square mile radius.

I do, we have around 290 million. What happens when all of those, perhaps more since the population is growing, become electric?

As Yogi Berra once said “Predicting the future isn’t what it used to be”

We really won’t know what will happen until it does.

    Correction; 10 million 'EV' cars

Maybe your great or great great grandchildren will see 100% EV cars in the USA.

How do we stay on topic?

Stick to news and less opinion. I do not want to be a hypocrite because I have been tossing my opinions around. So I will do my best to stop. I will update the first page as well.

Figured that is what you meant, but me being me…well you know. :)

Million dollar question is, can the improvement of the infrastructure keep pace with EV sales? And what will land look like, will there be any wild open areas left? What is going to be the environmental impact of an ever expanding infrastructure?

That type of thinking is what got us into trouble in the first place.

You can’t change human nature. Our greed has put us in a pickle. But some how more consumption is the answer.

Elon Musk says he wants to save humanity. Teslas first deliveries of the EV semis were to a junk food corporation. A bit ironic, yes? They contribute to the obesity epidemic our country is experiencing. How much fresh water does Pepsi convert to sugary drinks? Organic farms would have made more sense to me. We can’t even take care of ourselves, let alone the planet. Tell me how it is all going to work out.

Not sure where you have been, now-a-days opinions are news. How are we going to fix the worlds problems if we don’t talk to each other and share opinions?:) :p

Not gonna lie, we agree on so many things. However, lets ALL just remain friendly when we do not agree on things.

I watched a video series in my undergrad called the story of stuff: https://youtu.be/9GorqroigqM
(I studied Natural Resources and Sustainability in case you were curious.)
    NR SE.jpg

You could say it was an indoctrination film but I already knew most of the facts before watching this movie.
If all humans consumed resources the way that Americans did... we would run out of resources, or need something like 9 planets just to keep up.

I am trying. Trust me I could go full on dick mode, but I refrain.

Who knows with these exchange of these opinions and points, @Firn who admitted to his love for sugar, might change his diet, and perhaps live a long healthy, hopefully happy life. Isn’t that what the push for EVs is? Trying to keep the planet habitable longer, so we all can live longer, healthier, and hopefully happy lives.

Like I said, not against EVs, but a lot of things have to change if we want to save the planet and ultimately ourselves.

Ha! Think I mentioned that earlier, when 3rd World countries become 1st World we would need 5 planets. Now it is up to 9!? Yeah, not sure if it will all work out out without some foresight. Though we humans tend to plow ahead without thinking things though. As they say, “we will see”.

People forget that re the on/off peak. Same people ask how I afford to run my swimming pool filter with the electric bill and I have to explain that I run the filter off peak (unless I'm outside vacuuming it) and use this new gadget called a timer to regulate the hours it turns on.

And EV's have built in charge timers to charge during off peak times if they need it.

New superalloy could cut carbon emissions from power plants

Researchers repurpose 3D printing to discover high-performance material

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As the world looks for ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, researchers from Sandia National Laboratories have shown that a new 3D-printed superalloy could help power plants generate more electricity while producing less carbon.

Sandia scientists, collaborating with researchers at Ames National Laboratory, Iowa State University and Bruker Corp., used a 3D printer to create a high-performance metal alloy, or superalloy, with an unusual composition that makes it stronger and lighter than state-of-the-art materials currently used in gas turbine machinery. The findings could have broad impacts across the energy sector as well as the aerospace and automotive industries, and hints at a new class of similar alloys waiting to be discovered.

“We’re showing that this material can access previously unobtainable combinations of high strength, low weight and high-temperature resiliency,” Sandia scientist Andrew Kustas said. “We think part of the reason we achieved this is because of the additive manufacturing approach.”

The team published their findings in the journal Applied Materials Today.

Material withstands high heat, essential for power plant turbines
About 80% of electricity in the U.S. comes from fossil fuel or nuclear power plants, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Both types of facilities rely on heat to turn turbines that generate electricity. Power plant efficiency is limited by how hot metal turbine parts can get. If turbines can operate at higher temperatures, “then more energy can be converted to electricity while reducing the amount of waste heat released to the environment,” said Sal Rodriguez, a Sandia nuclear engineer who did not participate in the research.
