Filled up some cuts that went a little too deep to have some clean metal.

Gonna need some close ups of your earlier sets welds so we can compare them to current welds.

I come across some of my trailers I built 20+ years ago on occasion. I look at the welds and think "fuck! Someone bought this shit from me and is happy?". I sucked back then or was having a bad day.

It's a hobby I weld like once a month these days lol. But I know I have a long way to go.

One of those things you miss never learning to stick weld in school .

Is dealing with Arc blow without even thinking.

Newbie ran into Arc Blow on a job site really freaked him out.

Told me The welding machine was broken.

The joys of never learning to stick weld.

I was at Friedman’s looking for a bandsaw blade for the high school robot team (no luck) and looked up to see the shittiest welds i have ever seen. They were all in a channel lock tool vault on display. I should have taken a photo. I don’t know what pissed me off more … that some one decided that was good enough to ship, that it was good enough to sell, or it was good enough to buy. It kind of made my blood boil.

Speaking of firsts, these are my first ever MIG welds on mild and stainless steel Oct 2021 -

And my most recent, which was that tire holder I made recently. So that one isn't just welding but also fabricating the whole setup and getting it done on CNC -

    Thanks!

You'll notice all those Ts have writing on them; I was turning up heat, then hotter, then hotter, and then hotter again.

On the other side of each one I messed with wirespeed.

This is why I tell people to run the same bead over and over again (what I was taught in school actually). Only way to see instantly how settings affect one's welding. And if there were any other "flaws", hopefully it would be noticed by the welder since every bead technically should be run the same way.

Made up some more clamps for the welding table today.

    20230218_111816.jpg

I also ended up having to gouge out both sides of the winch plate on the bumper. BUT I was able to get everything cut apart, and cleaned up. and the new clamps helped keep everything aligned. properly

Some people have a great head start having excellent hand eye coordination before learning to weld .

Something to do with 3"x5" index cards I hear every time.

I welded the seams while the bumper was on the vehicle; had added washers where the bolts hold it to said vehicle to make up for any "shrinkage".

I’ve heard this as well. You basically use a pen to draw out the same pattern you’d be running with the weld puddle. Like drawing out consecutive cursive lower-case “eeeeeee…”. You’re training the muscle memory to stay consistent while welding. Good doodles if you’re ever on hold while on the phone.

I actually have an art background so the concept wasn’t foreign to me but it’s usually the guys with shitty penmanship that have a harder time running a consistent bead.

    Interesting but makes total sense.
