It looks like I’m eligible for a complete frame replacement from Toyota. They said it would take 3 months for the frame to come in. Truck has 85k miles on it. Do you think the rusted components in the front is excessive or normal? All original. Thanks

Maybe not 'excessive' but bad enough to deserve attention. And when they start stripping the frame, a bunch of stuff is going to break.

If they are going to do a frame, time to refresh those bits all around. And this time for goodness sakes apply rust preventative. 'Cause you'll not get a second frame.

Cosmoline, Wool Wax, Fluid Film, all viable options. None of the rubberized crap.

They did mention that some of the stuff will probably break. They suggested getting a whole new power steering assembly and tie rods. Also suggested getting new calipers because of all the rust. One good thing is I asked if they could install 5100s all around and they said absolutely. There would be no labor charge for that since the frame will be off and an alignment is included. (They can install the 5100s I already purchased on my own). If they can apply a rust preventer I’ll have them do that as well.

Shouldn’t whatever they break they should fix but I understand that if you want parts replaced while the frame is being replaced that is a great time for hard to get at non-warranty items to get new again

Most folks don't know it, but when you get your frame replaced under Toyota's program, you actually get much more than just a new frame. There is actually a complete kit of parts that comes with it with all new fasteners, Lower Control Arms and many, many other parts that normally break on disassembly. That said, there are still parts that are not included (shocks for instance) that should probably be replaced while the whole thing is apart.

Wow, I didn’t know this. I guess I’ll wait to see what’s not included and replace those items.

The full inspection report suggested I replace the following:

    Steering rack and pinion
Serpentine belt (they said I would save a lot on labor since the frame would be off and it would be easier to do)
    Calipers, pads, and rotors
    Tie rod end
    Power rack and pinion assembly
    Power steering return hose/tube

None of that is included in the kit.

This is a copy of a Toyota service bulletin regarding your frame replacement. Take a copy of this with you and ask them why, if the parts on this ancillary list need replacing, are they asking YOU to pay for them.

Wow, this is incredible. I didn’t know so much would be included. I’ll definitely bring this with me when I bring the truck in. Thanks for this!

Once it's back you'll love it. Was 3 months for mine as well, I didn't get a vid of it but I was able to identify 2 large holes without crawling under the truck. I pointed them out when checking it in to hopefully save the safety risk of lifting the truck.

    ^This.

All of this is publicly available information through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at https://www.nhtsa.gov. Folks would be better suited heading over there for the most current and accurate info including program specifics. While there is a lot of good info provided here on TW, a lot of it is also 2nd & 3rd hand info getting botched and passed around.

You'd probably be better served showing your dealer the below provided link from the NHTSA (page 5 and also referenced again in Q5 of the Q&A section). No offense to @SWPA Tacoma or anything, but this way your dealer can't scoff at you for providing some attached screenshot from "some stranger on an online forum."

100%! Seen too many folks get the short end of the stick on this frame replacement deal due to dealer negligence, ignorance, or them just straight up trying to game the program in order to pocket extra cash.

I also wouldn't have them do any rust prevention - we already know their shit doesn't work. Buy a FluidFilm or WoolWax kit, four quarts will do you for several years, or just pay someone local to do it if that's not the kind of work you like to do.

The frame has finally arrived at my local dealership and is scheduled for installation on Saturday. I am bringing Bilstein 5100s that I purchased and they'll be installing them free of charge of course. I'm bringing a copy of the bulletin @SWPA Tacoma posted above.

When my 08 was done I supplied new suspension, power steering rack, tie rods, body and rad bushings.
All was installed free of charge they suggested power steering lines so I got them thru them as well.
Tech was great then it got totaled by a kid running a red light a yr later dammit!

Very exciting. You'll be thrilled when it's done.

Like you I had all the shocks replaced (at 11.5 years and 117K it was time anyway). Love the truck even more now.
