I went to school only cause it was free, and my house didn't have a garage. This house does.

 

I got super lucky when I bought my house. Has 220v in the garage. I didn't even think about welding back then but I knew having it would come in handy some day. Glad I picked this house lol

 

Had to wire the 220V myself

But I did get an extra 110V 15amp circuit that I use just for my bandsaw or air compressor.

 

I had to change the plug on the 220v outlet. That's about as much as I'll mess with it haha. I have a separate circuit for the power tools. But if I'm using the bandsaw and the compressor kicks on it usually trips the gfci outlet.

 

Yeah so at my other house it's the same where if the AC is on, I can't really run the microwave otherwise it trips the circuit.

My house now I made sure I was covered.

Thing is, I went two pole 50 amp breaker for my 220V. Did that cause I had a nice AC/DC pulse TIG welder. Decided it was overkill and I won't TIG aluminum at home so I got rid of it and now my MIG welder has more juice than it needs.

Good on you for at least making sure you've got 220V; huge difference from running 110V.

I'm spoiled now where my CNC setup and plasma cutter can run, air compressor is on, TV and music playing while running my drill press or bandsaw all at once

 

I figured you would get the idea.

3"x5" index cards were very cheap targets for both handguns and long guns when one was to lazy to set up the steel course. a good head start with hand eye coordination.

which makes a big difference between good and great welders

 

No need to take a class if you think your good.

Find a third party test site pass the code test for what you work on.

I told people this long before You Tube.

At the end of the day one can have many credit hours of class the only thing important is having passed the test.

I'm working on building my exhaust system and I'm going to use my titanium 170 and stainless wire .035 with TriMix gas. The exhaust will be a mix of 304 and 409. What are some good settings for amps a wire speed?

 

So many things can effect the setting on your machine.

Make a practice joint or two and get things dialed in . I have never used any pre programed settings

Why Tri Mix ? Then just what blend?

I only ever used 100% Argon.

 

I kmow we had this talk before; I've used tri-mix for MIG on stainless steel as well as argon/co2 (98/2) when helium was unavailable for a short bit. I prefer tri-mix.

I've only used straight argon if it was for TIG welding.

 

In your case I agree .

Last thing I need would be 2 more cylinders of Tri Mix . On one job we had a custom blend made I can not recall the blend right now.

If it was on hand I would use it.

 

Yeah I won't get a stainless steel request often, if any at all at home.

But there are times where I want small TIG setup with a small bottle of Argon "just in case".

 

I'm using a mig so that's why I'm using they tri mix. I used the settings chart on the welder today and didn't like the results. I moved the amps and wire speed around and didn't find anything I felt was a good weld. I'll have to cut more pieces to practice on.

 

I know it was mostly a joke lol

I've learned more about welding over the phone from a friend in North Carolina than I have on YouTube. I think having someone actually putting in the type of work you're doing is invaluable. If I ever begin to take it more serious or take on work for others I'll definitely look into taking some tests

 

Today, I was able to get the bumper mostly done.

I still need weld the shackle tabs in place. I decided to stop for now, an not rush this part.

Also need to go over everything make sure nothing was missed, and finish blending the front and the rest of the surface prep, before final paint.

 

Man, this CNC shit is frustrating as hell.

New consumables. Ground directly on work piece.

Current at 45 amps, speed at 40 ipm, air pressure at 60 psi. Smoothing enabled and finishing overlap at 0.2 in.

Cut file tested with thinner material for fitment purposes.

"A" is where I started this thing. You'll see the bottom wall didn't penetrate all the way, yet when it comes around it pierces right through and follows up to my start point just fine.



Decided to run a second profile of just the outer perimeter. That run starts at "B" and guess what? Same issue.

The worst part?

One side is cut square, another side is beveled, and finally another side after is also beveled but backwards from the other one.

 

Yep. It gets you worked up sometimes.

 

Sometimes Sarcasm does not come across real well in type.

 

I have already found the voltage way to high when the heat shut off.

During the summer the AC starts up wire starts bouncing off the weldment.

What sucks it can be the neighbor as the level of input power in the Electric grid drops off.

With .035 wire to get it to run correct on stainless it will be much higher voltage then mild steel.
