Who actually likes their 3rd gen?

I had no problems driving the GTI (his current car) or the Diesel Jetta (son-in-law sold it) last year.

The memory muscles it took to familiarize myself was simple...to include, pushing down the gear selector to get into Reverse. (These are VWs)

I have not owned a manual since way back when I was stationed at Dyess AFB, TX (Abilene) and it was a brand New, Red 1993 Isuzu Rodeo.

That was when SUVs were starting to be a hot market.

So my familiarity/transition from an SUV to a truck was not really a shocker as some on TW explain with their dislike of MPGs. lol

Like I've said, this is my first Toyota & Truck all rolled into one! I am not disappointed with it...even before I got the OTT Tune, the truck drove fine in "no hills" Delaware.

It was only after a year of driving my Sport (and it learned my driving habits) that I pulled the trigger on the OTT Tune.

 

This will be my first Toyota vehicle ever. My first truck since 2004. I have mainly owned GM products but lately have been Honda and Nissan products. My wife has VW Atlas and that is nicest vehicle we have owned as a family. I really like the way the 3.6L VR engine sounds. Not fast in any way but for a highway cruiser it’s plush and the seats are super comfortable for me.

 

I used to mod, however no much how much money you throw at it can never go where I can put my dirt bike. Tired of fixing broken shit the night before to get my ass to work the next day. Just need a reliable hauler to the trailhead. Though it can get tight with all bullshit I carry for the bike. There are times could really use CCLB full-size.


I’ll pass modded Tacos and Jeeps on gnarly 2 tracks, and smile heading to the really hard stuff.

 

I think the difference in opinion involves mostly how much topography your state has. In flatter areas closer to sea level, it’s fine. In mountainous western states, it leaves a lot to be desired.

 

LOL, I've been mostly injury free from my active lifestyle, however, I seem to get damaged doing ordinary things; in 2003 I broke my tibia, spiraled my fibula, and partially tore my right foot off doing something horribly reckless; picking my kids up at daycare (puddle of water with ice underneath it). Then in 2019 I was leading an excitable Arabian horse out to the winter pasture after having been shut into the barn for three days due to extreme cold; he was so happy at going outside he threw his head in joy, slipped on some jagged ice, and while regaining his balance he knocked me over and fractured my left fibula.

The 2003 incident had me delivered to the hospital in an ambulance where they performed surgery to screw me back together. During the six months of my recovery I swapped my 530i 5MT for my wife's minivan; I'd sling my casted leg over into the front passenger footwell and drive left-footed. Shortly before my cast was set to come off I overheard my wife talking to her sister and jokingly say, "Yeah, instead of swapping cars again, I'm going to break his other leg."

For the 2019 incident, the owner of the farm where I served as a caretaker decided since I'd fallen, we were going to keep the horses in the barn for another few days; I got up, retrieved the Arab, and led him back inside. The owner saw me walking in pain and noticed blood streaming from my left hand and asked if I was okay, "Not really I said, I think I broke my leg." I went inside, got cleaned up and drove my Acura TL 6MT to a local Urgent Care center, and yeah, Mr. Murphy came along for the ride; not only did I hit pretty much every red light along the way, but school was letting out and at two different points of the trip I got stuck behind busses making frequent stops to drop off the kids. It goes without saying my clutch work was not up to my usual standards.

 

Ah. Yeah, my goals are different. My 1 inch lift was for reducing squat when towing (and better dampening under a variety of weight), not for off-roadin'. Most everything else was interior comfort, bed utility, and looks. Ok, a lot of it was for looks.

 

The 2gen came out my freshman year of high school and I loved it, bought my first taco when I was 29 and it was a 3gen and I love it. I’m also a big taco fanboy so there’s that.

 

Lowered square body S10s were huge when I was in high school.

I love square bodies. That’s a dream truck for sure. I keep pestering my wife to go in on one but I’ve got too many projects as it is lmao. One day tho it’s gonna happen

 

They had zero grip. My dad had an extended cab with the 4.3L with 5 speed manual. That truck had zero grip in wet weather. It was an adventure in the rain. You had to start in 2nd gear and it still had to feather it to not sit and spin.

 

You just needed more tire in the rear

 

The rich kids filled the student lot with bubble-butt Mustangs or S10s in my day. I had a yellow Cimarron.

 

1985 Tan and Brown Pontiac Grand Am. Ugliest color ever but it was a car so I washed and waxed it every weekend.

 

I had a 1995 S10 Balzer and it was a Terd. Was always a die hard Chevy but after getting 2 pieces of crap in 1991 & 1995 was done with the American crap. Toyota and Honda is all I look at now and every one of those I have had over the years were still running and still working fine at 200,000 when I got rid of them.

 

I just upgraded to a 23 PRO from a 17 Sport and will say the transmission is much improved from the 17 tranny.
