My 2017 Tacoma 3.5 just started making a weird knocking sound that comes and goes when in park or at idle. It not the famous Tacoma tick. I found this video that sounds exactly like what I am hearing. Any idea what it could be?

Update: noise is gone it was the vacuum pump

@9TRDTCO i think has come the closest to the solution with getting lifters replaced. Mine got better after replacing sparks.

Injector cleaning cycle. It can last 10 seconds to 10 minutes and is normal at idle. This prevents carbon buildup.

Make sure your oil is filled correctly as well, just because.

These engines are obnoxiously noisy. Diesel like. The benefit? No carbon build-up. More info here.

For reasons I have no clue listening to a few of these v6 3.5's, some sound louder than others, yet they all run ok.:notsure:

So the noise in that video is normal? Mine is making the same exact knocking sound even after I have been driving it for more than 20 minutes. Oil was changed yesterday and levels are exactly where they are suppose to be.

I’ve been in communication with @tacotroy17 and he knows what I’ve been through with my Tacoma. Countless dealership visits, some said it was normal until I found one that was actually will to help.

I was still within my extended warranty and finally got it resolved. They first did an oil change and blamed me for lack or maintenance but the noise came back after I left the dealer. I do my own oil changes before 10k so there was no way.

I don’t drive it as much as I used to because I got a Ram 2500 Cummins :D but I have put in about 600 miles and no noise after the lifters. I will attach a picture of the service record.

Is it something I need to fix right away or is it something that won’t effect drivability
