Welp. Some not so good news. Bad roof damage... (Not as bad as originally thought)

THanks, nice rig too. The 60 series are bigger than the 80 series...lol But mine has been out of commision for a while, bad timing chain guides. Requires the engine be pulled to replace them. Please parts are expensive. But yeh 160k blown motor is probably the head gasket unless it's blown on the lower end. I bought mine in 2011 for $5k. If it was running today I bet I could get 10-15k for it.

 

Amazing it still caved in even with the roof rack.

Really does give you an appreciation for automotive engineering when you think about the huge range of conditions any mass produced vehicle is expected to endure.

 

That Prinsu might have kept this situation from being a worse!

 

Maybe a trimmed piece of plywood up there would have helped.

 

Yes and leave it on there overnight.... then after it have stopped snowing, remove the plywood.

Put waterproof coat on the plywood. Once it dries, then place it on the roof, strapped down so the wind won't blow it off.

 

Yes, cause the roof rack maybe could've helped if there was some ply up there. In my opinion, the rack can't help if the object falls through.

 

Am I wrong in thinking something covering the rack would actually make it worse? With no covering the weight of the snow is fairly equally distributed but if there was a piece of plywood or whatever all that weight is shifted to the mounting points. Yeah they're near the stronger points of the cabin shell but still much smaller load distribution area.

 

Worth a try after that debacle.

 

That's exactly what I thought of after the fact. The plywood. I'm going to do that. I just never thought this would happen. This truck ain't moving until spring but I won't be so careless going forward. If there is a huge storm I'll come back up and clean it off.

 

The plan is going to be to take it to get an estimate first after it's out. Then move on with insurance if the repair is reasonable. Otherwise I'll either repair it myself eventually or just have it done out of pocket if there is any risk of it being totaled.

Thoughts?

 

Rack caused most of he damage, take it off lay on you back with your sneakers and push out then put the rack back on.

 

It's mostly pushed out now just by hand. There are a few creases that are causing it to spring back when I push. The more and more I look at it I think it's fixable. I could live with it as it but I hate body damage. Especially having done bodywork for personal projects most of my life.

 

PS - The roof is pretty much the only thing I never liked about gen 1's. Like everytime I washed it I could feel that it was just thin sheetmetal. Gen 2's and 3's have way more reinforced roofs.

 

You mean the huge storm that's coming in now? Mammoth forecast is batshit crazy. Easily 5 ft in the next 4 days.

 

I guess. Luckily this time I'll be coming back up here in a few weeks so I'll be able to clean it off before it gets too bad.

 

Rack didn't cause the damage... it was the snow which later became ice in very cold weather. The water leak through between crossbars which became icicles. OP had deep snow which is too much weight. Just like big ice block sitting on his roof.

I have rack on mine and had 6 inches of snow storm here but no damage yet.

 

Just an update. My uncle was able to pull a favor with one of his buddies and he's going to use a loader to dig a path out for my truck tomorrow at 8AM. So she'll be out. And I'll be back up here in 2 weeks to take her to SF and fully assess the damage.

Icicles is exactly the reason. I believe I mentioned that in an earlier post.

She's out!!! Found another dent, though... suspiciously where a previous claim was. Shoddy body work? You can see the bondo cracked.
