Tacoma Vs. Rivian

Seems to me it's designed with the actual usage patterns of most new truck buyers nowadays rather than the aspirational usage patterns, starbucks parking lot and all. Let's be real, the majority who buy trucks really just want an SUV (comfy to drive, roomy, new tech, big vehicle) but don't want to be an "SUV" person. Look at how many people come here asking for suspension help to make their Tacoma ride more like an average car. How many truck owners actually need a bed, or go offroad, etc. I'm not being judgy, I don't need a truck myself, it's definitely a lifestyle/convenience thing for my hobbies and house work.

It'll let the weekend home depot warrior throw some tools and dirt in the back occasionally (again, me), maybe get you to a hiking trailhead or campground up a forestry road, and be comfy the whole time. If we start picking at people for not using their vehicle in the optimal way or how we imagine it's "supposed" to be used, well, glass houses and all that. I've had my Alaskan friends poke more than a little fun at me for my city-living taco. Let Rivian owners buy their luxury not-SUVs, set up their gucci $6000 RTT, throw their $12,000 eMTB they ride twice a year on their $1000 tow hitch rack, and move on

 

I don’t begrudge anyone for buying whatever they want. However, I do begrudge being coerced into owning an EV. I personally would never spend $80-90k on a vehicle. Currently EVs are ridiculously overpriced and not enough history for me to be comfortable that they will be a reliable option. Try finding any EV for under $30k. I know they exist but actually getting one that low cost in a reasonable amount of time is damn near impossible. I tried to buy a Leaf or a Bolt when I bought my Sentra but the lead time was 8-9 months and the ones I could get at that time were over 35k and my Sentra was 22k. That’s a big difference and I can buy a lot of gas for that difference. My Sentra averages 32 mpg in city and and 38-41 on Highway.

 

You would think if they really wanted to save the planet, would make them more affordable to the masses. With the recent discounts at Tesla, has me wondering if the markup is a bit inflated.

I like the tech, don’t care the marketing though. Did go to school for advertising, which is basically learning how to glam up things to bullshit people into buying products.

 

You are very impatient. If they could sell them all cheaper they would. This is still the infancy of EV production especially the batteries which is most likely the highest cost of EV production. When battery supplies are streamlined prices will be affected accordingly. Supply chain issues need to be smoothed out which is still affecting costs. I know we live in a "I wont it now and cheap as possible' world but man you gotta understand we just aren't there yet. Some of the worlds largest car makers still haven't made a lineup of EV's or just one model.

Right. Battery tech is what makes the modern EV possible. Lithium-Ion batteries [of any size] weren't commercially available until the 90s.

 

Yeah my old neighbor had an old converted EV Volvo using a homemade lead acid battery setup circa 80s, I would say it has as much relation to a modern Li-ion EV as a steam-powered coach has to a Civic. EVs without Li-ion (or other future high density battery tech) is like trying to engineer ICE vehicles without gasoline. Yeah there are substitutes, but they simply aren't viable.

Diesel was supposed to run on peanut oil, however petroleum is waaaaay more profitable. Why majority of other propulsion methods were deemed null and void.

How many millions of barrels of peanut oil do we generate a year? Does $40 a gallon sounds like a deal to you?

 

I saw about 3 or 4 R1Ts today. One was on a 3 car transport trailer, and the others were parked along the curb in various places.

 

So looking forward to those tiny turbines coming down from the $15k pricetag and 10 hour rebuild time.

Also looking forward to seeing one of these videos where the pilot hasn't skipped leg day (or the gym entirely.)
