The used 3rd member may not have been set up well when the previous owner replaced the gears.

Gears can get weaker if you go very high, like 5.29. Generally not a concern if you stick to the more usable ratios like 4.30 or 4.56.
No. Gears aren't like chains. The load isn't effectively spread amongst more teeth if teeth are smaller. Parts upstream of the diff have a reduced workload, that's about it.

A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more
Not sure if this has been suggested yet. Three things come to mind for strength in your diff.

    1. Yes, regear it. 2nd gen Tacomas are good with 456 and 488. 456 for stock style gearing on 35’s and 488 for a bit extra power on 35’s. 529 I can only suggest if you’re moving up to 37’s or bigger or if it will be a dedicated trail rig.

    2. solid pinion spacer. This protects against 2 things. Smacking the pinion flange on an unmovable object and extreme torque.

    3. cryo treatment on the gears and bearings. Look it up, it strengthens the metals when done correctly.

I've had 4.56 gears on 35's for years with a 6" lift, go wheeling regularly and tow a 4000lb camper with no problems. ECGS assembly FTW!

I can't seem to find any hard evidence one way or the other. Best I could find was this guy's post, but it just makes it more confusing and he could have made up every word

First of all, hi mountain neighbor

Second, sorry to hear about your diff blow. That sucks. I am by no means an expert on gear strengths but from my understanding you do gain a little bit of reliability out of your gears by regearing as it now doesn’t take as much engine torque to push the wheel which in turn creates less strain on the gear sets. Its definitely less wear on the rest of your vehicle so in my opinion, probably worth it

As for fixing it, I’m currently running this group buy with Premier West who does the setup and installs. We’re almost to the maximum discount of $1600 for a front and rear regear which will include diff rebuilds as well.

If you decide you don’t want to regear and just want to fix the one diff, they can just count that as a 2wd setup which is $850 total. They also offer different warranties on the diffs including a 10 year warranty plan. Hope this helps!

Yeah definitely! Always down to wheel! Let me know if you want to jump on the group buy and we’ll get it taken care of

Alright so got my diff rebuilt, and re-geared, the guy from the shop finally, so hopefully this goes better this time. The last ring and pinion that was in there was made in China, and I also didn't know there was a break in procedure for the diffs, which can have a lot of affect apparently. I know I will eventually break it but hopefully not for long

I believe Yukon gears are also made in china so unfortunately that doesn’t say much these days.

I just got mine regeared on Thursday. HUGE difference in power and acceleration. Highly recommend it

Ouchhhh. Should’ve jumped on the group buy like I was saying. $850 for the diff work and they’re in riverside. Way closer

Like I said they did mine last week and I’m happy. Great deal
