I know there are threads on rear view cameras already but this thread is looking for ideas from people who put a camper on their second gen and added a rear view camera onto the camper.

Below are what I see as my two options but I would like to hear from someone who has done this on a second gen.

    considerations;

    1. The 2nd gen has a poor resolution 6V camera on the back with harness disconnect at the tailgate.
    2. The camera display is a rear view mirror screen activated when put into reverse.
    3. I am wanting to install a double din deck in place of my stock radio and display rear view camera on it.

    Options

    1. Add signal upgrade at the front of taco to increase voltage to 12V in order to view camera signal. (~$40) then purchase another camera to mount onto camper and plug into the existing wiring harness which I would disconnect and use when the tailgate is removed. (~$250)
-PROS of this is using the existing wiring harness to feed the signal to the doubledin.
-CONS of this is poor rear camera resolution on existing toyota camera.

    2. Replace wiring harness with a 12V system front to back and purchase two new 12V hi-res cameras (one for tailgate when used and one for camper when in use..

PROS- cost - two 12V cameras for the tailgate and camper is roughly $100.
CONS- labour, running new harness not as easy as one thinks and susceptible to breakage etc if not done right.
    - not sure about the wiring harness if I they come with a tailgate disconnect or if one can be made?

Am I missing something? is there a better way? what option would you choose?

I installed a cheap $40 AutoVox wired license plate camera inside of my cap so I could keep an eye on my dirt bikes when hauling them with a trailer. The monitor is "switched" so I can turn it on when I want. I was a little concerned about the clarity of the image since it was through the back window of the cap, but it looks good to me. Here's a picture showing where it was first installed before I moved it and another of the monitor with our big dual sports on the trailer. Hope this helps you somewhat.

If you have the 7 pin towing connector, tap into the battery charger for 12v.
There's a ground bolt under chassis where all rear circuits tie into.
Measure the distance required to the new location, maybe a replacement harness (tailgate one) could reach.
New 12v cam needs only video output to vehicle harness. (x2 wires)
Cab camera connector is readily available on the left side of cab fuse/relay ECU box.

HMMM, I do not have the 7pin, I have the 4pin, but aren't these tacomas standard with one harness? My tacoma was a base model but I added intermittent wipers, cruise control, rear view camera and mirror, remote door locks etc .. all plug and play.. so that 12V wire for the 7pin must be back there somewhere. Once the weather warms up here, I will have to crawl under and have a look see.

thanks, that might be an option for inside my camper when I want to see whats outside my back door while in the camper. I am thinking that I will tap into the existing harness for the cameras. Camera source has a nice system that does just that but its costly https://www.camerasource.com/automo...ilter=6030&model_filter=6219&year_filter=6277
I will need to add another $50 adapter tot he front of the truck for the tailgate camera to project onto my doubledin

Not sure which camper you have but I know on the newer ones they come prewired to add side and rearview cameras. The 2022 174bh I bought was prewired and I added Furrion Vision S camera w/7" monitor. It was as simple as plugging it in, pair it and you're on your way. The tailgate camera I had to prewire into the Stinger unit.

I bought a old Northern lite 610. I will have to drill and wire this myself.

Oh ok, this is the one I got. Circled is where the side and rear view camera were prewired.

You mentioned you have a 4 pin connector. These 4 to 7 pin connectors are pretty cheap on Amazon

I mounted a "wireless" camera to the back of my RV. The camera was waterproof and powered by 12v that powered one of the rear clearance and marker lights. Camera image was then displayed on either a cell phone or Android tablet in the cab. Since a rear view was only necessary, for me, when backing, I would turn on the parking lights, power on the tablet, and would have a rear view. A very simple and cost effective way to get a rear view. Kinda low tech, but worked as well as the solutions listed here and a 15 minute install

Get a wireless and a separate monitor. They make all sizes, including monitors that replace your rear view mirror.

It's both the easiest and the highest quality.
