@caribe makaira , thank you for this info. I just picked up a replacement tailgate for my '16 quicksand TRD off-road from being painted, and now ordered the connector to make it compatible.

@caribe makaira after installing the new tailgate with the harness plug change, my video is coming in with tons of static. I verified all my connections and wire placements. Do you think this is a camera fault or circuit on the truck side?

    Details: 2016 TRD Offroad
Tailgate: Brand new from factory via a local parts dealer. Assuming it is a 2023.

I actually had this same issue. It turned out that the camera wiring was faulty because I had bought the camera second hand. I would definitely look at the entire wire all the way to the camera to make sure nothing is cut or spliced. I assumed everything was good because it was loomed in plastic so I couldn’t actually see the physical wire.

Any chance you have a buddy who has a TACO, so you can test his cam on your TACO?

Thanks, I guess I could open up the tailgate and ohm out the wires from the camera to bumper.

Unfortunately no, was wondering if I should order a new camera from Rock Auto and return it if it ends up not being a faulty camera.

Ohm'd out the harness inside the tailgate. All the pins and wires checked out okay. Found a replacement camera on Rockauto for $108. Hopefully that's the fix.

For that price I hope it's an aftermarket camera? Someone else has upgraded, maybe @BLtheP ? I have one in the box waiting for me to get to. The OEM one is kinda weak as it is.

Toyota dealer replacement was over $300
I will try the Rockauto option first to confirm that's the issue.

Is it OEM or aftermarket? I would wait for @BLtheP to confirm which one he swapped to, he has prior experience on this topic and I believe his swap was an improvement over stock.

Whoops, I forgot about this post. I have the Kenwood CMOS 740HD. It is a dramatic improvement over stock but definitely needs an aftermarket head unit to hook up to. It also needs a custom bracket fabricated to get it into the tailgate hole. I’m not really pleased with the job the audio shop did, the bracket they made is flimsy and the camera when in place is slightly crooked. I’ve gone back to stock for now until I work out the mounting issues of that camera. I would like to get some sort of bracket 3D printed that fits the bolt holes and gives me the perfect spot to bolt the camera to the 3D bracket for a flawless installation.

    New Camera, installed.
    Same result.
Harness from Camera to Bumper checked out okay.
I am assuming I have a wiring issue from the bumper to the dash.
Has anyone had any luck contacting Toyota for wiring schematics?
