That'd be really helpful; at only $20 a year it's a no-brainer to go this route versus paying $250 a year for something I'm familiar with, but is overall limited.

Lol I have to submit my DD214 along with a printed and signed form with email.

    Thought I saw it's $1,295 per year?

I have credentials working at schools that can get it at the education rate and I don't need the simulation add ons or anything so I just get the basic

Yeah I just want basic drawing.

It's cool to get all that stuff but, I don't want or need it.

Found out about it cause I inquired about Draftsight only to finally get a response that the military program is only for Solidworks.

I know @Speedytech7 and @Wulf have you covered as well, but you’re always welcome to ask me anything too. I don’t use Solidworks nearly as much as I used to, but I’m decently proficient. I basically drew my Jeep from scratch on a whim and it came out pretty great :D

Regardless, I’m positive that you’ll have no problems getting up the curve, as I find it pretty intuitive. Just don’t be the guy who doesn’t fully define his sketches and assemblies!

    For sure!

I'm sure I'll have some dumbass questions, but as long as the small and often used features aren't hidden away then we're good.

Some things I like about Draftsight is -

End points, an issue I see with newbies on the CNC side are that they often buy their drawings cause they just cut stuff (don't even weld). I don't buy my drawings but will veer on the side of downloading something if it's free, like some gussets I found. However, the drawings needed a tiny bit of cleanup which is why I prefer to draw my own.

Draftsight allows 'snapping' to a quadrant, midpoint, endpoint, tangent...and not just with your pointer but also by typing in said command.

I love using hidden lines as I'll draw 'dimension' constraints with them and draw inside or around those lines. I delete them later but if I left them, they won't carry over when I'm working CAM on Fusion360.

Measuring, I know Solidworks will have this readily available but I'm hoping it isn't hidden in some stupid sub-menu somewhere.

As for your comment about 'defining sketches and assemblies'..you lost me already

Oh you meant university; school is free for me so that's no problem.

I just happen to be in school now already but figure I can take a course at a nearby college for CAD after I'm done. That won't be until next June though and I'll be using said software the moment I get this order done.

Haha! No worries. It basically boils down to making sure that your sketches and assemblies don’t have degrees of freedom left undefined, which can cause sketches and assemblies to do some pretty wacky and unintended things. Once you get used to using things like sketch relations and mates instead of snaps, you’ll see how much more powerful SW is and how far you can go with it. Not to mention cool things like flattening for sheet metal jobs and other fun stuff!
