Over the years Petroleum base fuels have won out, mainly because it is plentiful, cheap and most profitable.

50s they were pushing nuclear powered concept vehicles. Currently NASA with the Mars rovers are using the tech. Nuclear batteries sound cool, stay charged for 10-15 years, of course not commercially viable.
