My tacoma lost a lot of its power.
It is a 2000 with v-6 and manual trans.
    It has 99,600 miles

I took it into autozone where they plugged it into the diagnostics computer and this is the results.
    1) mass air flow sensor
    2) oxygen sensor
    3) Air Intake Temperature sensor
    4) cylinder mis-fire on cylinder #1
    5) cylinder mis-fire on cylinder #2
    6) cylinder mis-fire on cylinder #3

When idling it misses and chuggs, as in vroom-vroom-vroom... it is not constant at all.
When going down the road it will fire in all cyinders when the rpms are between about 1500 and 2200, but above that and it misses again.
Also, when I hit the gas it sounds like it is gasping for air.... it is not a hissing sound like a vaccum leak it is more like a deep hollow sound, and no has power. It will sputter a bit and it will go, but it will go best when I slowly accelerate.
Top speed is about 65mph on a level road.

I Changed the spark plugs and fuel filter about 4 months ago.
2 days ago I pulled the plugs to see if any are fowled, but they are all clean and from the color they are buring quite well, not fowled, no carbon, no oil... just clean buring plugs
I just replaced the air filter 3 days ago.

I replaced the MAF sensor today (dec 12th, 2008) and it did not do any good.

I thought I would change the oxygen sensor next, but there are two and I don't know which one to replace or if I have to replace both.

As for an air intake temperature sensor, I can't find that, and autozone does not carry one.

Autozone suggested I replace the coils, but where it is running fine between about 1500 and 2200 rpm's I would say they are just fine.

Common sense and the fact that one thing leading to another tells me that the mis-firing is happening because an incorrect fuel-air ratio, so once that is fixed, the mis-firing should go away.

    Any ideas or suggestions?
I need to get it running, but don't want to pour hundreds of dollars into parts that are just fine.

    Thanks in advance.

Being as there is a misfire on cylynders #1 #2 #3, I dont think its a head gasket. Cylinders #1 and #3 are the first two on the passenger side, while Cylinder #2 is the first one on the driver side. Have you checked your coil packs to make sure they are connected propperly?

    Thanks for the response Chris,

Yes, I have checked the coil packs... I checked them when I pulled all 6 spark plugs a few days ago. All coil packs are connected correctly.

Like you said cylinders 1, 2, and 3 are not on the same side so a bad head gasket does not sound correct. At the same time since it fires just fine when the RPM's are between 1500 and 2200, I don't think it is the coils either... if they were hooked up wrong or not firing correctly it would not matter what the RPM's were at it would still miss.

    Thanks for the thoughts though.

What about the fuel injectors? Maybe you could run some sea foam thru it? Im mostly thinking "out loud" trying to find an answer for this problem...

I have not checked the injecters, but that is a good idea... I will have to check tomorrow.

Could it be sticky intake valves? They only have to hang up a little for something like this to be experienced. Timing perhaps? What color are the spark plugs when you pulled them out?

this link is for a 2000 service manual that should help you troubleshoot some of the parts that you suspect without having to change them

Brown is good. Mixture is right on if they are a tan-brown color.

Just wanted to let all of you know what the problem is. Bad news.... the timing belt slipped so the timing is off.

Thanks for all of your thoughts.

Good to hear you found the problem. I thought the V6 had a timing chain? How does that slip?

no damage. Just need to replace the timing belt and water pump... the water pump is leaking and antifreeze is dripping on the belt, which is probably why the belt slipped.
