Good morning all. Today is dig-out day. Schools are on doing class via internet at home today. Snow started around 6:00 last night and has been going hard every since. I have about 10" with no sign of stopping. I'm getting up early to do the first round of snowblowing.

My 86 year old mother had to go under the knife again last night for emergency surgery. The tumor in her colon was removed successfully a month ago yesterday but something opened up and she got a serious infection. They went back in and found the cause of the extreme white blood cell increase. I'm suppose to relieve my young brother at the hospital but I don't know if I'll be able to get there. Even the Tacoma in 4WD with top shelf tires can't climb steep snowpacked roads. I have to climb 150 feet elevation in a little over a quarter mile to get to LDS hospital. I have no idea why they plant a major hospitals in the Salt Lake valley on mountain sides. Beats me how ambulances get to the LDS and U of U hospitals.

Have a good day all and be safe.

Just a quick question to some who have been retired longer and live in the colder regions how many go south and how long. My older brother goes to Florida for 3 months. Mostly for health reasons, the cold makes him ache. But I'm not sure if I could handle more than a couple weeks. I don't gulf and we we enjoy less populated places. Fargo is almost too big. When we heal up we are considering looking for some places to try. A friend has a 5th wheel, but I'm not sure if that is something I would like. We share a family cabin in the woods but it's up north too. But after a week there I'm ready for home. We spent a week in the villages 5 years ago. A Lot to do but was ready to get home after a week. Any recommendations for trails and biking with some historical value.

Good luck with that. I would say take your time the truck should get you there. I'm sure the road is open unless it is a blizzard. Our area is under a blizzard warning. The troopers and EMS have ice tires on and do well getting around. Seems like it is the other people on the road not prepared for it that cause the problems. Hope your mother gets better.

    Morning all:

Wishing all the best for your mother Bryan.
We don't see them very much anymore, but maybe a set of chains or the modern version of them.
It's been a very loooong time since I installed chains on a vehicle, I have a couple of sets of them but doubt if they will fit any of the tires on my current vehicles, heck, I think I have a pair for the 66 Impala, and a pair of studded snow tires, but they will never be on that car again! :)

Prayers and good thoughts for your Mom Bryan . Hope you can get to the hospital to relieve your brother and see your Mom.

My wife can't handle the cold so we head to warmer climates for the winter. I used to hate being away from home for any length of time but the older I got the less it bothered me.
During the pandemic we spent 3 months in Vero Beach Florida and it was warmer than home but the water was to cold for a swim. Last year and this one we rented an apartment in St. Maarten in the Caribbean for 3 months and I do miss home but not the cold. Beach time and pool time are relaxing and dining out occasionally is nice. It took me a few years to be able to sit on the beach and read(we sit under some trees so we are in the shade) and somedays a bit of eye strain with the bathing suits on the beach. So it really depends on your likes and where you feel happy going and enjoying the time there. As for trails and biking, Southeast Pennsylvania is loaded with them, but alas its winter and most time cold.
Hope you can find a happy place for the winter.

As long as I have a queen size bed that's comfortable and that I can carry with me, I can be comfortable traveling. That's the big criteria for me. I don't like strange mattresses.

I was in Oregon (mild weather) before I came to Texas in 1993. Told my brother "two years and I'll be back." Well, every Summer I keep saying "that's it, I'm out of here." I'm still here love October to May (except for ice storms) but at least on a 100F day, I can jump in the truck, turn on the AC, and get to where I need to be.

I'm still searching for a teardrop trailer (queen-sized bed & kitchen on wheels). Miss my big Ford Transit van, but prefer the Tacoma for off-road adventures. Lock and Roll hitch for some of the trails (don't want to bust anything, but also not stress the hitch nor trailer frame).

My sisters keep trying to talk me into returning to California, but the number of homeless is too insane. Some have mental health issues, and others it's an alternate lifestyle. A few years ago got to talking with our waitress in Santa Cruz. She works for days a week (6 AM to 10 PM); sleeps in her car; showers in the back of the restaurant; but lives four hours away (Central Valley) as the price of housing is so expensive. Hence the crazy hours and sleeping in her car.

30% of the nation's homeless are in California. Irony 500,000 people left California last year. Austin, TX has gotten too much growth, but median house prices are dropping and back to $500,000; 20 years ago in the outlying communities, it was possible to get a 3/2 for $150,000 but no more.

I don't like FL weather, even in the winter. Son lives there, loves it. I've been a few times, not going back. Can't fly anymore, I have a repaired carotid artery aneurysm, can't take the pressure changes at cruise altitudes which should be automatically controlled, but isn't always. Can't drive for 19hrs. straight anymore, and don't care for motels in general. I like the seasons in OH, although it can be a bitch sometimes. Mild winter so far this year though, and now it's like spring again. Forsythia blooming, resurrection lilies are up about 9". Perfect.

A little something every chance we get.
Among some minor putz, today was RAV4 experiment day. Last time I took it to Austin for service, it was a windy day. Whenever the wind is "just right", at highway speeds, it sounds like the sunroof is probably going to pull itself off the car! (Or SUV, or whatever). Did some searching, got on some RAV4 forums, and found it's most likely the roof rack crossbar. Starting in 2019, Toyota made them NOT adjustable from back to front, AND your other choice is to completely remove them. A couple of people tried angled string across the bar, with mixed results. Most found some fairing/deflector worked. BUT, "only some of them fit" the sunroof versions. Because of where the glass and roof meet. But, I decided to try one if I could find a decent "experimental price". EBay for a 34" Yakima "mostly new" at $50 was by far better than new ones. Crossbar is 36", so I know it will fit between the stanchions. And here we go...

    20230222_133709.jpg
    20230222_133717.jpg

So, even with a little foam on the mounts, it's going to sit on the glass edge, not the paint.

    20230222_135946.jpg

Well, it is what it is. So, open up the sunroof and see how it goes!

    20230222_143530.jpg
    20230222_141818.jpg

Well, that is interesting! Once the glass slides back, the little screen riser actually pushes the fairing up and it sits nicely on it's top bar. It has no problem pushing it out of the way at all. And when the glass closes, the fairing is not sitting so low, so the glass just slides right back. I guess that will be OK.

    20230222_143703.jpg
    20230222_143715.jpg

It's got a pretty slick little mounting system, so it's easy to remove. Wasn't nearly as windy as promised, so I only went around the block; once roof open, once closed. Being Texas, we haven't opened it much! I'll hit some highway speeds when I go fill it up later this week.

:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/roof rackers. My old 1978 Celica with a bike rack on top used to make an low-volume but awful-sounding moaning noise at about 45 MPH. Very eerie.

I'm in Warrenton VA this morning after having driven the Z4 here yesterday to deliver it to its new owner. We'll take care of business a bit later this morning, then he will fly me back home to Pennsyltucky. I haven't been in a small aircraft in quite some time and I'm really looking forward to it!

Good morning all! Calling for temps over 70 this afternoon here in PA. I need to avoid looking outside while I'm here at work later today lest I develop a case of anal glaucoma. Afraid if I see how nice it is outside I can't see my ass staying here.
