They can’t be that rich if your poor ass non-EV owning type could eat there. Unless they were just out slumming it with the yokels for kicks I guess.

Jury is not out. There was a study done I think in 2021. They followed something like 57,000 vehicles. They compared a Toyota Corolla to a model 3. Initially, the 3 had a much worse environmental impact but over time it would be less. The question was, how many miles would you need to drive to have a net reduction in co2? It depends on how you get your power. Worst case is coal, best case is hydro electric, wind, etc. For coal, it's something like 70k miles. For wind, it's 12 miles. For the average American that get electricity from natural gas, it's like 18k miles.

I'm sure these numbers are slightly off but they should be pretty accurate. I'll try to look for the source.

I couldn't resist looking this up.

    Diesel 19,898 BTU/lb
    Peanut oil 18,075 BTU/lb

Peanut oil also has a really high flash point but not the worst fuel.

along those same lines, Engineering Explained walked through how often times a far more efficient vehicle ends up being better for the environment than an existing inefficient vehicle despite the costs and impact associated with the 2nd car

I post this all the time. He's sometimes above my head on some mechanical and electric stuff but this video is easy to understand.

Explained this earlier, you must of missed it. The overall impact of EVs on the environment not just CO2 emissions. Talking cradle to grave, resource extraction, recycling at end of service life, energy production, infrastructure, population growth, since assuming with cleaner air the population will explode even faster, 3rd world countries moving out of poverty, etc. Studies have shown that if everyone in the world lived like Americans, we would need at least 5 earths to support the resources needed. So is that really good for the environment?

    https://www.overshootday.org/how-many-earths-or-countries-do-we-need/

So yes, you are correct the jury has come to a verdict, my mistake, the future looks bleak even if we all somehow converted to EVs.

Using myself and a Rivian as an example: I like the RS1 over the truck, built one to my specs on their website, an easy $100K+ OTD for me to purchase one. Being a self employed retail business owner would have to sell a lot more products to cover that expense, which in turn uses more energy and resources than what I personally and my business currently consumes.

I am a sole proprietor, my “environmental foot print” is low in the big scheme of things. As a business owner, there is only so much I can do for profits. To increase my profits I have to hire employees, sell even more products. What if all my employees want a Rivian like mine? I rally them to get their numbers up, sell more stuff! Because I want my employees to successful and happy. Happy employees increase profits. Those products need more resources and energy to be manufactured and distributed. Not to mention what the employees consume. That is for one Rivian per employee, doesn’t include everything else they need to live on. Businesses are only deemed successful if they continue to grow, not if they maintain their current course.

So with that “In the Big Picture”, how are EVs better for the environment?

Me personally believe conservation is better, but what do I know? I am just a knuckledragger. Unbridled consumerism got us into this mess, surely more of it is the answer…

Mentioned peanut oil, because Rudolf Diesel used it originally to power his diesel engine. Not suggesting we use it today. Thought that seemed fairly clear to what I said earlier. Regardless of flash point, using peanut oil doesn’t make financial sense, as I stated. Nor does it make environmental sense either.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Diesel

“Diesel was interested in using coal dust[21] or vegetable oil as fuel, and in fact, his engine was run on peanut oil.[22]Although these fuels were not immediately popular, during 2008 rises in fuel prices, coupled with concerns about oil reserves, have led to the more widespread use of vegetable oil and biodiesel.”

No male in my family lives past 70, will turn 51 this spring. You do the math (of why I am bit impatient)

We could blame the oil industry lobbyists of why EVs aren’t further along than they should be.
