I think it is what you make of it. If you have no choice regarding your commute then you can try to be productive with your time. My wife makes check in calls to family on her half hour drive home every day from work. That way when she gets home she does not have to spend the evening on the phone with people. Plus it gives her the built in excuse to hang up sooner since she has "arrived at her destination" and needs to get out of the car.

 

I run 5 Haas cnc machines. 3 core and to that cut with diamond saw blades. I machine glass for a living and have been working here going on 37 years now. Most stuff is +o/-.005 every now and then something will come in and say it’s this size with a +.001/-.001. For that I go to the machine I started on back in 1986. Before we had cnc . Myford cylindrical grinder. Very accurate.

 

What shop are you at? I toured a shop in NH that did glass and some really hard materials that would require diamond tooling

This is the older Myford. It takes off .050” a turn. The new one takes off .040” a turn. Have to tell people I have trained to remember which one you’re running.

 

That's interesting. One shop I worked at had 2 older manual lathes. One was a 1:1 on the X and the other was 2:1 on the X (move it .001 and it will cut .002)

 

I wonder if we make some parts for the same companies, just based off the site and the company certs

 

The old one shows .001” movement but like That lathe the part is turning so it actually takes off .002” the new one shows it .002” movement like it should.

Yup, machines always have their quirks. Those look to still be in good shape looks wise

 

My friend's parents did the same, he went to school while she worked. Got his Master's quickly and was able to support the house while she went to school after.

The music thing is the one thing I notice about not commuting anymore (30 min each way), that's my time to blast the stereo with my stuff. I rarely turn the stereo on at home in general and couldn't listen to metal even low around her.

Yeah, problem is, I'm on the service and start-up side. Never done the construction side.
But, something like that is on my mind. Not sure if it is for me or not, but, I'm open.

It will come down to money... the only reason I keep pushing as hard as I am still...

 

I am lucky enough I can listen to music (headphones) at my desk. Podcasts are a bit too much, I can't multitask like that and actually comprehend the podcast. I've tried, but meh.

I don't mind driving - and honestly even 20-30 minutes is probably fine. But it's the hour+ each way/multiple trains etc - no thanks.

There are people who commute Providende to Boston every day. That's just bananas. Trains not bad. But people drive it.

My neighbor leaves about the same time I do. I get home around 315 in the summers. There have been several days where I get home, go for an hour bike ride, take the dog for a run, maybe take her out for a kayak - etc. And when I'm getting home after my enjoyment time - he's just getting home around 6.

To me that's just not enjoyable. In the winters I'm less attached. I hate the cold and the sun goes down around 4.

 

You all talk so much in here it's impossible to keep up lol

 

Honestly, the same would work with service and start up. Getting a full building ready at turnover, all systems started and tested can be a major push. Theres never enough time and its right at the finish line. Having in house resources to help is attractive to some CMs.

 

I used to get home around 5-6 every day back when I lived in NY and that shit absolutely takes a toll on you, I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to something like that.
