This is probably a dumb question but I’ve always wondered this and a recent post got me thinking even more. I’ve never been in a raptor so I have no idea how they perform only that a lot of people use them for going fast in the desert.

Here’s the question. I’m not talking engine performance because we all know the answer to that. Both trucks are 4wd in the example.

If you had a bone stock raptor (maybe top of the line OEM options but nothing aftermarket) vs. a run of the mill built LT like most of us have. 3.5” front with bypasses, SUA, tuned shocks, etc. nothing wild like a three link.

Speaking from suspension performance only which truck will perform better? Or say you had a certain course that maybe didn’t rely on horsepower but suspension which truck would make it around the course first?

Disagree entirely. They really aren’t all that special in my honest opinion.

    Thank you lol.

And I agree. Buddy of mine that used to be on here @DMCtacoma sold his taco and got a raptor. Raptor has like a stage 3 icon kit on it that he revalved. It does really well actually but runs out of travel fast when things get even slightly big. Soa in the rear kills them. His is a 1st gen raptor though. Never seen a 2nd or third gen in the wild

@erok81 i don’t believe those are equal comparisons. The Raptor is one of the best performing vehicles out of the box as far as off road capabilities.

But they still have limitations and are SOA. So if you’re comparing next to a tuned SUA Tacoma, the Tacoma has better performance. Raptors essentially have a +2” kit up front, really fancy shocks, with a shock relocation in the rear and SOA. Plus all of the other fancy features the Tacoma doesn’t have.

Have a good friend that has had all 3 generations now. Out of the box it’s a cool truck, no doubt. But IMO a really nice mid travel setup is enough to outdo one in stock form.

    Too many to remember
I’ve owned 2 raptors and I’d rather have a stock one over a LT Tacoma any day. Raptors have power, tacomas do not. Plus they are way nicer daily drivers and can actually tow a trailer.

All depends on what you're expectations are for the truck. I've never had the opportunity to run a Raptor as hard as I do my Tacoma but from the experiences I have had, there isn't a Tacoma "mid travel" setup out there that can compete from a ride quality perspective. I don't have the #s in front of me and I know you're going to look them up, but I imagine a Tacoma with +2" LT and a stock Raptor will pull about the same amount of travel, and the Raptor has IBP shock tech which will blow a single monotube shock out of the water from a performance perspective.

That's ignoring the additional features that a Raptor offers from a drivability standpoint. They have power, towing capacity, and creature comforts in stock configuration without the nuances that come with a modified Tacoma.

The Broncos need their own class so the rest of the 4600 guys have a chance

That's an entirely different conversation. That's a funding difference between the Broncos and the rest of the 4600 class. Those Broncos are far from a "stock" vehicle. .

Yeah those unobtainable parts put them in a league of their own. Far from what the “stock” class is supposed to be about imo

The rules for 4600 need to be overhauled. My take on it is that if it is a stock class than the only thing that should be modified is for saftey. It should be as from factory: Powertrain, suspension, wheels and tires, steering, axles, body. Then you can strip the interior add a race legal cage, bumpers, winch and lights. And NO Profressional drivers. If a driver or co-driver competes in 4400, Trophy Truck, Pro UTV they should not be able to compete in any class below those. I would also add 4800 cars must have a proven record of racing in 4400 and the chassis cannot have been built with in the last two years.
