Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Many of the bigger Companies put welders through paid in house training to be able to pass what they need.

Then have a third party tester come do the test on site.

Depends sometimes we were curious to see just what they could do. Ask in person just Why they would reference You Tube as education .

A new hire willing to learn with a good attitude could become an asset .

Though it very seldom played out when a starting wage was mentioned they for the most thought they were much to skilled to work for a entry level wage.

This fence has been a great project using the welder, grinder, bandsaw, and various other tools. The original wood fence was inside the rocks on the left so I added concrete screws to several 4x4 plates to the edge of the rocks and welded the posts - giving me 28" more width on the side of the house. 2x2 posts with 1x3 runners with a 4" flat bar across the top. I'll be cleaning and clear coating the metal next weekend then adding 1x1 wood slats alternating sides with a gap so we'll see through but it will keep the dog in.

All in all a fun project - great excuse to have and use all the tools - and great practice for vertical and upside down welds in my futile attempt to improve.

a lot of good upside down and vertical practice ... amazing how fast the rust comes (this is about 1 week) - cleaning - fixing the horrible spots - and coating this weekend.

simple answer is "i don't know".

looking to make a change in jobs, and wanting to bolster my certifications. i've self-taught myself so far via the internet and youtube university, but most companies are looking for something more official than "i built junk in my garage and it didn't fall apart".

You’d be surprised how many places will hire and teach on the job. They’re hurting for workers everywhere I know of anyway.

not what i'm seeing putting my resume out there. so far only 1 place is offering any training. every other place is demanding 2-3 years experience minimum to be considered.

Why is working/fabricating in your own garage or shop any different?

If anything, you are still gaining experience and sometimes even more than at some jobs where you just have trigger pullers.

Doing more with less teaches you to become really efficient. Then when you're introduced to the tools that'll make your life easier (or the job), everything else just falls into place much better.

Believe it or not, I kind of got "that look" when applying at this professional company last year. Mainly cause I had emphasized having gone to school (but being honest with my lack of experience).

The weld test did separate me from the rest of the candidates though (6 plus me so 7 total).

But getting to know and talk to all the guys there, every single one of them was self-taught. And if it says anything, the shop had me doing mainly stainless steel work and most of it was MIG with some TIG work on thin stuff.

Don't let those that got certified keep you from applying, and don't discredit your own experience or knowledge simply because it was gained at home.

I’m sure it’s very different in different markets. Sucks that they put that. Having worked at and having friends who work at most of the welding shops in a three city area here I do know that their online ad will say “3 years experience” and they’ll still take the best of whoever comes in for a weld test. The “office” folk might write the add. But the welder giving the weld tests is who decides which welder is best. Hope that gives ya some hope and your area lightens up with “experience” because there are guys who’ve been working here a decade who can’t weld worth a damn and guys who are in their first few months of welding ever who are way better than them already. Weld test is king.

Figure out the direction you want to go. Just what processes would you feel comfortable testing?

Understand the code you want to test for.

The thing to remember most any company that hires you for code work is going to have you retest for the code they need just for a paperwork trail. Some Code tests are only good for 3 months unless you have documented proof you were doing code work.

Go fill out applications your weldtest to keep going to the next level of pre employment interviews gets you in the door. When your at the location in person ready to take a weldtest your ahead of the game rather then just sending a resume. A sad fact of life in many cases it is still who you know that gets you a start..

I have been away a few years things can and do change many companies were hiring through temp agencies to weed out the slackers before offering full time employment.

The market is really strange some places employees are painting lines it is so slow other places employees are begging for an 8 hour day.

In some cases people get lucky most of us ended up paying our dues doing what ever grunt work we needed to get started. In this part of the country the rite of passage pretty much seemed to be the strip mines though that was a long ago time flies.

Thinking I'm going to cut these pieces out tomorrow.

Use a small plate as a "back piece" and drill some holes in it so I can plug weld this on the front -

    Nice. How big?

Those eyebrows look like they might be risky for tip ups. In CAM selections you can use the Preserve Order and Entry Point features in F360 to minimize the chances of torch hanging up on one. You select where a cut starts and finishes and where to go for the next cut.

You could add small tabs for those eyebrows as well. Then just snap them out.

Did we ever figure out exporting DFX in F360?

What you guys are suggesting makes sense, I just don't know how to do any of that at all.

My time limited every day and unfortunately the only time I spend on F360 really is when I'm cutting. And I'm only cutting once a week for a few minutes each time.

As for the save file, I had to go some weird way about it cause the screenshot you showed me has mine greyed out like I stated before (if you missed it).

It's easier than it sounds. You just want to pick entry/exit points and paths to minimize risk. See if these make sense:

Instead of selecting all your contours at once by clicking the face, go through and pick each one, in the order you want to cut them so the flow doesn't make the torch come back over places already cut out (potential tip ups).

Here for example I'd recommend selecting them in this order: right eye; then left eye; then mouth; then outer circle.
    Smiley 1.jpg

Then on the Passes tab, select Preserve Order

    Smiley 2.jpg

Then on the last tab click Entry Positions. You can see I picked so right eye it starts and finishes at a point ending in the direction towards the next cut. Same on the left eye. So if either piece tips up, no matter as I am moving away and not coming back there.

What I meant is, in your initial post it already made sense.

Just not knowing how to implement it is what I wasn't sure about; I may come back to my table later today but I have several errands to run.

Thank you for dumbing it down on the software side though! I haven't put much into it because I just downloaded Solidworks and have a yearly subscription moving forward from today.

    Basic clamp.

Looks like he welded a bolt and probably runs a nut on the bottom to hold said clamp?
