Hey Y'all, I know this a pretty dead thread but hopefully there's still someone out here. I'm headed home to the 915 for the holidays and was hoping to hit some trails. I haven't been off-roading since High School and that was mostly going out to the wall and doing some dirt-biking out past railroad in the northeast. What are some of your favorite spots to take your trucks that aren't too far of a drive out? (Also if anyone's interested in wheeling, I've got another truck already lined up to join. He's got a Ranger but we'll make an exception)

Hi there, I just went out past red sands where there is a quarry, I don’t know if it’s still operational or not, but I have been wanting to go there for almost 20 years now and finally made the drive out there yesterday. I have to say it’s my favorite spot to go four wheeling now. Some areas are a bit rocky but fun to drive on, the views are great as well.

If I recall correctly that side of the quarry is closed or minimally used, south of Montana/62. Most of the activity is from the quarry just north of that spot.

It is a cool area to explore, lots of “roads” someone laid out in preparation for development. There’s a 90 acre lot up for sale directly east, adjacent to that old quarry. Reasonable price for the acreage too.

You’re right the north side is where Jobe has the active quarry. I did notice a sign in that area stating some land was for sale. 90 acres is a lot of land. I want to go around the area next time to see what’s on the other side. I used to like to go to red sands alot in the past around ten to fifteen years ago, but it’s just too crowded now. It’s also really sad how polluted it is now, people really need to stop breaking bottles, burning pallets, and dumping trash out there. This is why I have been trying to go check out other areas.

That almost looks like some of the area around Oro Grande and a little bit north off of Highway 54.

Do you happen to know if there are any good trails out by Oro Grande, I have passed through there so many times on my way to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso but never thought about four wheeling out there.

Yes there are some good trails in the Oro Grande area where the Old Mines are at. Alot of that country is best to cover by ATV or UTV since it is pretty tight with Mesquite and Creosote Bushes, That is if you don't want to scratch your truck. But you could spend a day in that area.

Nice, I might have to hold off since I have been trying to stay on a bit wider trails to prevent that. Thanks for letting me know about that area I’m sure I’ll check it out some day.

Let me know when you are thinking about going that way, If I am available I will go and show you around. I am only 28 miles north up the Highway.
