Anybody have opinions on a 2003 Sequoia SR5? My cousin was just given one that is in pretty poor condition, and I may buy it from her as a project vehicle to be a beater around town. I am still not sure if it is 4wd or not.

I use Gaia 99% of the time, but have been playing with CalTopo lately, too...

I have a 2007 as my DD...solid trucks and worth fixing up if it's not too far gone.

Oh and @EatSleepTacos the local forests use GPS enabled PDFs on Avenza out here. Very useful to have and keep updated.

I think it may be a bit far gone, I haven't seen it yet, but she said it is leaking something (she's not sure) and the seats are pretty trashed. It does have 220,000 miles on it. I'm checking it out thursday.

After just going through the Garmin/Gaia/onX thing myself for KOH.. I'll be sticking with Gaia and paying for it, and keep OnX to reference some trails. Gaia is far more powerful and tuned for what I need/use it for. OnX was cool to just be able to see names of major off-road trails. Gaia was more what I need/want. Waypoints and tracking, more/better layers. A little clunky but got used to it quickly. It's a more overall/general off-grid navigation tool for sure.

My Garmin Drivetrack (that I've ran for years) was still a better option.. as I could do all of the same stuff as Gaia.. without having to worry about cell service or downloading maps prior. It's now useless though with them recently cancelling their satellite/birdseye imagery subscriptions. (I'm assuming something happened/they got in trouble). You can still run a Garmin with a hard loaded Az Hunt map to give you all that information though (trails, private vs public lands, etc) without the subscription. I still have mine in my truck for a backup that will never fail me as its all hard loaded. Gaia is a great solution for me now though with the Garmin BS, especially when paired with my wireless android pioneer unit.

If you can get a smaller/mountable Garmin like a Montana or something, and load it with a Az Hunt map.. I think that would be a nice setup for a bike. Small, rugged, not dependant on service, has satellite imagery and land lines.

I used OnX out at KOH also. Other than the maps they had for KOH it was so clunky to use. Especially trying to create a route from hammertown to RP2 to take the 2500 chase truck that would be easier than the sand dunes etc. I used OnX as a reference and made my routes in Gaia and used that.
I want to use OnX more. I'll use it a bit here in a few weeks out at Mint400 and in April for the Kofa trip.
Which if anyone wants to go to Kofa to explore, hike and check stuff out. Hit up @TailHook to get added. He's running it.

If it's a 4WD, it'll have a fishstick in the center console ('05-'07 are push button)...

    Here's a good resource as well: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

    220K isn't anything for these trucks...mine has 240K

That's what I was considering. I'm still on the fence and the unknown is how much I will actually depend on GPS and if I will need one mounted on the bike in the first place, I just don't know. Growing up riding, I just followed the adults that knew where they were going so I never relied on GPS.

I'm leaning towards Montana GPS on the handlebars for basic waypoint tracking and navigation but having my phone in my pack with Gaia that I can use for looking at satellite imagery. I think at the end of the day I'm just overthinking the shit out of it.

Yup. Same thing. Just used OnX to reference trails/obstacles. Gaia is much more useful.

And the dunes is part of the fun going back and forth. We take that route almost every time going back to the house across the lakebed.

 with a Hunt map card loaded into the Montana, you wouldn't even need Gaia for satellite imagery. I ran a Montana for a while in the truck, but upgraded to the Drivetrack and just swapped my card over.

I ended up hitting a boulder heading Westbound on Highway 6 near the bottom of Price Canyon in Utah New Years evening. A 7hr drive from Farmington, NM to SLC took 10.5hrs that day. All from that huge snow storm that came through that weekend.

Insurance totaled my truck out due a new frame being 4 months out. Bent the frame where the LCA mounts. I bought the truck back and will fix, as well as upgrades to come too. I also bought a commuter car, which is nice to have with the fuel prices, and taking the time to fix Clifford with 216k and still going strong.

I thought the lower oil pan needed to be replaced, but after going through one of the threads on TW. It looks like the upper needs to be replaced too. This should be fun.

Will take it to a local off-road shop to see what they can do with the frame.

No shit! I figured it was best to take it head on rather than try to swerve around it or put on brakes.
TTB is a rabbit hole I'd rather not take. Thanks got JD Pivot idea. That looks like the route I'll take.
    Thanks mang!
My thoughts exactly. I was able to drive it home after looking it over. I knew it knocked the alignment out. It wasn't until I got to Soldiers Summit when I realized I was leaking oil.

Yeah, both a friend of mine in the front seat and my mom in the backseat were glad I was driving. It took them a bit to recover mentally. My 25yr old self 15yrs ago would have reacted differently and the outcome would not have been good either.

I know I did the best thing possible in the situation. It took me a month to accept the fact insurance was totaling it and I was ok with it too. It was paid off 7 months prior. This is the first truck that's been built like it is. My first truck was a 2006 and I knew it was totaled the day it happened. It wasn't a matter of if, but when the insurance would have how much they'd give me. This one I couldn't let go. I've been to a number of states, places, and adventures in the 7yrs of owning it. I'd put 152k miles on it after buying it with 64k. I'm not done with it, and it will come out better than before with more mods than before.

I've had two instances since where driving this winter since it happened that I had a flashback with shit in the road.
