Thanks! It seems like there’s a lot of agreement in this thread.

Lots of folks are cheap or bought theirs 10 years ago. What's the local market look like? and what can you afford to pay for a 19 year old truck? Check cars.com to see what similar vehicles are listed for.

Good questions. It seems like the market is quite competitive out here. I can afford to pay $18k especially since it’s been well maintained and doesn’t really need much right now. I’ve seen others for sale for less but they’ve also needed more work to catch up on maintenance like suspension, timing belt, replacing leaky valve cover gaskets, etc.

If you really are set on getting it, talk them down. Try and get more cashout on your trade..
I think youd be better off selling the21, then walking in with a cash offer on the 04.
Personally i wouldnt pay more than 15k.
And i cant believe im even saying that :D
    Good luck

There are a couple non-trd 1st gens sold for more than $17k, not including shipping costs. Maybe those dudes are just in a different league than most of us financially haha

3rd gens are still underrated. Me personally I wouldn't downgrade, especially safety wise. My 2006s abs sucked it couldn't figure out how to stop on dirt, it didn't have traction control so it would fishtail when turning on a wet road and the LSD wouldn't correct it. My 96' need gears and a locker so it could go up a dirt hill without getting sideways. No problems like that in the 3rd gen.

Without a doubt 3rd gens are fantastic trucks. I guess it’s part nostalgia and the simplicity of the older truck’s mechanics and technology. The size, sensors, and electronics all overwhelm me a bit and I worry about the long term cost of maintenance on all that stuff. Also it’s not clear if 3rd gens will hold their value as well as the 1st gens, but my inclination is they won’t because there’s too many out there and all this technology will continue to go obsolete, not be repairable, and won’t add the value it does when the truck is newer. If I’m missing something then someone please counter these arguments.

Came from a 2000 with v6 auto prerunner. This would be a significant downgrade. Nice truck, but think about it, 18k for a 19 year old truck? Not to poke at what people will think, but imagine what they will think when you tell them you traded your current for that one.

Well if I sell my 2021 privately for $33-34k, which I’ve been offered, and get a good price on a 1st gen, I’ll have a solid truck I want with almost $20k cash in my pocket. I don’t think anyone will say that’s a terrible deal. I’m NOT trading them straight up if that’s what you were thinking… That would be really dumb.

19 year old pre-owned truck? Very very risky.

That’s the camp I’m in. I’m really surprised by the responses in this thread. I work from home and only put on about 6k miles a year so this truck should last me at least 20 years without huge repair costs if I keep it maintained properly. If peeps in this forum aren’t the big spenders on the 1st gen tacos that are selling then I don’t know who is!

Yeah but you don’t know how the previous owners treated the truck

You think those 1st Gen prices are bad, try finding a clean 1st Gen TRD double cab on the west coast.

I made the reverse switch, sort of. The truck was dumb expensive for being 20 years old with 200k miles, but is incredibly clean with 1 owner since 06. I love the simplicity and how easy they are to work on, driving with analog instruments, the nostalgia for the era of Toyota trucks (arguably their best) and the smaller size/better maneuverability compared to how trucks have grown since. That said, you are paying a major premium for an old truck. For me, 2nd Gen double cabs were cheaper than 1st Gen, but I didn't want a 2nd Gen so I accepted paying more for the older 1st Gen. The trucks are great, but there is no denying that the newer ones make better daily drivers, have more room and are safer than the 1st Gens. Mine was intended for weekend warrior duty, and only served as a daily driver for several months. I've received more compliments on the 1st Gen and unsolicited offers to buy it than I ever did on my 2nd Gen. Pretty hard to make a sound financial argument in favor of buying a 1st Gen at the absolutely crazy prices they go for but I did it and haven't looked back.

I wonder how much I can get for my ‘08 with 123K miles, new frame , steering rack ( 4 years ago),plugs, coils ( NGK),valve cover gaskets , tensioner assembly and idler pulleys, belt , fixed exhaust, and new alternator.

I love my truck and I’m keeping it. Will buy another late year 2nd gen if the miles are low enough for my liking. Or a new 3 gen

The tricky part is a lot if not most used Tacoma prices are inflated right now due to inflation and such. You might get a premium for your Taco, but you might also pay a premium for a replacement.
