3 in leveling kit 33 tires 20 in rim
Hello everyone I could really use some advice I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR 2 Wheel Drive leveled on 33s 20 inch rims rims. I bought it new in December 2018 at 5000 miles I leveled it and added the rims and tires I haven’t changed the tire size once I am now at 95,000 miles and I had pretty severe vibrations while following traffic between 25 and 45 mph it would drop below 1500 RPMs and at 1100 and 1300 it would cause the vibration in the steering wheel and cab Toyota says I need a new transmission I bought the truck because they offered a lifetime powertrain warranty my dealership sees the warranty in my files but has a inspector coming out to determine if they will cover it my advisor told me to be prepared for them not to cover it how do I go about him sticking to their word and replacing my lemon of a truck

I have a feeling they're going to stick it to you for the lift and tires.

There's been a pretty big wave of these posts lately, it seems Toyotas go-to "fix" is always to just replace the trans. I'd be pretty surprised if it truly needs that big of a repair, if they're unwilling to help I'd start with a fluid service and go from there.

Being that it has aftermarket bigger wheels and tires, I'm sure they'll tell you that's what caused it and to pound tar. But if they wanna throw a trans at it on their dime, that's a no brainer

A few others on here have had same thing. Dealer told them new transmission as well. They changed fluid and that resolved their issue. Something to consider. Most dealers just throw new parts at problems till it's resolved.

I suggest you read all the fine print in that warranty. I can assure you their lawyers have, and if they say 'no way, because xyz', you'll be in the loser seat. And your wheels/tires/lift will become the xyz.

95k is well past any 'lemon law' protection. So don't even bother using those words.

Why does everyone always point the finger at the transmission? This sounds like a carrier bearing or maybe ujoint issue to me

OP does the vibration go away when you lift off the gas? Also am I reading it correctly that you have 90,000 miles on the current tires!??? When were they last balanced?

If an inspector is coming out,i assume its an aftermarket warranty company...if its lifted and wrong size wheels and tires,
thats just an easy way for them to get out of paying..

I just put a new set of tires on at 85,000 and I’m very good about having them balanced and aligned ! My tires were nitto ridge grapplers. I replaced them the same set because they lasted me so long I was very impressed. Seems like I’ll be flushing the tranny fluid. Everything with the drive shaft is fine I got underneath and check all that out

I’m just very dissatisfied with my first Tacoma at this point. I bought this as a forever truck and did the simplest of lifts and tire size upgrade. So much for a tough little truck. By the way it’s been nothing but a highway pony never even seen mud. I’ll still try the fluid flush and I’m still waiting to see what the inspector says

I don’t think any aftermarket warranty company has the money to have an inspector come out; more than likely a couple of texts are exchanged between fat men in cramped offices.

If OP is in Florida, he may have a fidelity warranty. They don’t even bother with new parts for their extended warranty plan, but would rather get you a remanufactured unit.

you don't need a new transmission. jeez, what happened to doing maintenance? people really want to spend thousands of dollars on new parts instead of changing fluid? or you could try resetting learned values, change the fluid, clean MAF sensor, change spark plugs, install new air filter, install ECGS bushing, change PCV valve, check u-joints, change the tires, etc....there's so many things to try. and you will probably still have the same vibration after spending $5000 on a new transmission that you didn't need in the first place.

replace the ATF and get the dealer to reset the learned values and you should be good to go i'd bet.
    :annoyed:

you should just remove all the aftermarket parts because it sounds like you messed it up somehow.

Only thing you can be disappointed with is. You put a lift, simple lift as you call it. 20's and 33s on a mid size truck with a 2.7 4 banger. What did you expect. Your making that truck work hard then it was designed to be doing. No one to blame but yourself.

Does the vibration go away when you let off the gas per my previous post? What exactly did you check on the driveshaft? Did you check the play in the carrier bearing?

Doing a drain and fill on the ATF isn't a bad thing (as long as its done right..) but really should do some proper diagnosis here first.

To @na8rboy 's point, youre pushing 33s with a 2.7L? Are you regeared? If so that might be another place to look too

The vibration goes away whenever I accelerate if I’m just cruising barely touching the gas between 25-45 it’ll vibrate when the rpms drop below 1500. It drives fine on the highway. I checked all the connecting parts on the drive shaft I don’t see anything worn and everything feels tight when I I try and wiggle stuff

I also talked with several mechanics before installing the leveling kit and 33s. The 2.7 comes with a 4.3 gear ratio and I was reassured by many that it would handle everything just fine and it did my truck was fine for the last 4 years

I have a 2022 SR and it does the shudder that is talked about widely here anytime RPM's are below 2000 RPM (most notably between 45 and 65). I asked them about it when I brought it in for my 10k maintenance and they said it drives "as it should". It's weird to me that some people's trucks have that happen from day one and others develop later. Maybe yours is more severe than mine but it is definitely frustrating that Toyota doesn't have a fix for this and either brushes it off completely as a non-issue or says a new transmission is needed if out of warranty.
