Tacoma Vs. Rivian

I utilized this website. Honest question...
It shows -32% charge when I arrive at the 2nd charge station.
6hr 35min drive, 1hr 25min charge, arrive at destination 8hrs 6min with 11%
Does this mean what I think?, Majority of the route is red dashes.



I could be using this wrong. I simply picked 2 vacation spots we went on in 2022.

 

What vehicle did you use for this route?

I’d have to assume that it’s right and that area is a charging desert. Hopefully additional Electricity America stations at Walmarts and Tesla opening up their network will change that.

Just to be clear, as a daily driver an electric vehicle would suffice. But for vacations or traveling for work currently it's not quite ready yet for my regions needs.

How long can they hold a charge without being used....think long durations parked.

 

In addition climate here, I would anticipate will wreak havock on the battery. We always need the AC at full force, other times it's all heater. Only a handful of days neither would be required.

 

Looking at PlugShare the trip is absolutely doable but there aren’t good options for actual fast, fast chargers. Several are pretty slow 24kwh DC chargers that will certainly work but are well slower than ideal.

 

I don't have an account there so I can't simulate. But that's the point, doable but very inconvenient.
Kaplan Louisiana to 2100 Millcreek Rd. Hot Springs Arkansas. That's a 6hr 36min drive for me in the Tacoma, granted there is 1 fuel up required so under 15min added so call it 7hrs total.

How well does a trip planner for EV account for elevation change and running the AC or heater drain on the battery\distance?

Again I'm not against EV I'm actually curious about these things I'm questioning.

 

There was a blogger or YouTuber that documented his 10 ish years with his Nissan Leaf (I believe.) Very informative and a long term study IMHO.
His available distance was drastically reduced if he used his AC, and he recommends finding a parking spot in the shade if possible. However I cannot recall why, my guess is simply heat is the devil and will reduce the life expectancy of the battery.

 

Some are better than others. You kind of have to know your vehicle’s real world use to be the most accurate at estimating your range. An EV is definitely not the most convenient vehicle for some longer trips depending on charger availability. Looking at your route it would be faster and less mileage in my Tacoma but a cheaper trip in my R1T. You could get all the way to Hope, AR using free chargers and only need to pay for charging once on the trip.

 

Agreed that apps are not the most ideal. In my Tesla you just verbally tell the car where you are going, and it does the rest. No need to worry about apps, planning or anything else.

If you turn off the active video recording security features, and don’t wake the car up by checking it on your phone, they will hold a charge for a long time as the car will go to sleep, just like a laptop that goes to sleep when not in use. If the car is always actively on with security recording, or you keep waking the car up from sleep, the duration is drastically less. Also if it is freezing out, there will be draw to keep the battery warmer, which would not go well for long duration outdoor storage in cold temps unless plugged in. But for that you could plug it into 110v standard outlet.

EVs actually excel in the heat. The batteries are most efficient when hot. If navigating to a supercharger a Tesla will heat the battery to 112 degrees F for maximum efficiency. And heat pumps to cool the cabin are far more efficient than traditional AC systems. While cold is better for ICE, hot is better for EV. Rivian has said they will be moving to heat pumps as well.

It’s not great in all areas yet, it will improve over time and hopefully moderately quick with the recent bill aimed at rapidly expanding the charging network. 24kWh certainly isn’t ideal, a very long lunch break (2 hours) would net 48kWh which is nearly +60% charge in a Tesla 3, good for an additional 210+ miles in a M3LR. But in a Rivian you’d get substantially less in that time, because the vehicle are so much less efficient from being so large and heavy. That same charge would only get you about a +37% charge on the large pack good for 120 miles. And this is something I think is so important to understand when EV shopping. Higher efficiency cars make this all much easier as they need less power that these larger EV trucks and SUVs that will take longer to charge, making trips like this more painful. With the same power input, the more efficient vehicles like the Tesla 3/Y will go much further. After studying this, it was part of the reason I cancelled my Rivian order and went with a Tesla and a Tacoma instead.

 

Heat and AC use do reduce range. Unlike an ICE engine that is a great heat provider since it generates a ton of wasted heat energy when moving the vehicle an EV has to use battery power to create heat. AC likewise reduces range but not as much when directly compared to ICE since they also reduce fuel economy when using AC.

 

Heated seats are recommended for efficiency over the cabin heater.

 

Outdated tech in an old early EV. Modern heat pumps used by Tesla and being adopted by Rivian and others are drastically more efficient than an electronic air conditioner using a fraction of the power. Parking in the shade when hot of course keeps the car cooler and reduces load on the climate control, which reduces the need to power those systems.

I didn't know that about the heat! Excellent to know. That's very unlike my experience with phones and computers...well any other batteries for that matter.

Is it advised to keep the vehicle parked and plugged in for long durations?

2 weeks to 60 days on absolutely no use.
Or
Drive 3hrs to work destination, say a dock or a heliport, park and walk away, no charging available.

I'm here for conversation and playing devil's advocate to learn more. Which I feel is going well. With the exception of comments like yours.

 

You just set everything to auto and never have to worry about it. The vehicle will determine the correct combination of heated seats plus cabin heat to keep you at your selected temp. Teslas will know where passengers are sitting and turn off the heat in those parts of the car to maximize efficiency, I’d suspect Rivian would do similar.

 

Not for the seats. Auto cabin climate if you want to turn it on but the heated and cooled seats are controlled individually for each seat.
