Soo my MAF Sensor got wet this weekend

Long story short, I sucked up some water through my URD intake, and now my AFRs are slightly off

Here's the unabridged version:
I decided to go driving through the monsoon this past weekend to a friends b-day party/crawfish boil, about 45mins interstate through the pouring ass rain. I have the URD intake on my Mk1 with a hydroshield. Granted i know the hydroshield is only water resistant, and not water/dummy proof, but i decided to roll out anyway.

Along the way i could tell some water was being sucked up from the sputtering and AFRs going a lil whack and my Ultragauge letting me know my LTFTs were out of parameter (-8,8). This all was happening right before i got to my destination. So i parked the X and let it 'dry' out.

When i headed out, i noticed it was leaning out (AFRs were really off) so i pulled into a gas station to dry everything out.

I ended up taking the hydroshield and air filter off and using the hand dryer in the bathroom, got everything dried off (they were both dripping wet). I used some paper towels to get the water out of my intake tube by the MAF sensor. I asked the gas station clerk if i could take a box off his hands and McGivered it to act as a hard shield so that water wouldnt come in contact with the filter cone. That helped and got me home. AFRs were fine under normal cruising but my LTFTs were still out of parameter.

Fast forward to yesterday and today. AFRs are fine under idle and cruising, however they are slightly off. During shifting it leans out, and under accel. it doesnt go as rich as it usually does. I dont think (hope) that the MAFS is completely shot b/c then i would throw a P0101 code and be limited to 3k rpm. I would have to believe that after a couple of days that the sensor is dry by now, but its not functioning 100% like it should. Can i just get some MAFS cleaner and spray it clean and hope for the best?

Update:Made sure the MAFS and plug were dry. checked the intake tube to make sure theres no residing water (dry) and disconnected the batt to see if that would trick/reset anything. No Dice, same issues. AFRs are reading near stoich even under acceleration

 

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and resetting the ecu?

 

Ya I would try disconnecting the battery, and while disconnected, clean the MAF.

While you're working on it, ditch the intake. If you can't even drive in the rain you have problems.

 

CRC sells a "MAF Sensor Cleaner" available at most Auto Parts Retailers. It's probably just Electro Contact Cleaner like Chris4X4 said.

I tried the CRC Maf sensor spray cleaner (along with disconnecting the batt) and still the same thing. Its weird that the sensor is showing skewed results. It seems like it would b either working or not

 

Maybe you guys need a snorkel kit, I keep reading too many posts about guys getting water in their intakes.
I'm not worried about my truck, I know better than to drive thru deep water

 

Again, not driving through deep water, just rain. I dont have the heat shield/splash gaurd, but its on order now

...if you notice he is in an Xrunner...so no deep water. have you seen a URD intake?


driving in the rain will result in water getting in the intake.

maybe on a truck forum you should research more truck related things than end of the world scenarios so that you might actually be able to help someone.

 

No wonder he's getting the damn thing so wet... he's not even running a front grill.

 

Ya X-runner or not, I mean, is the couple HP even worth not being able to drive in the rain? Maybe in death valley. Either get an enclosed intake or just go back to stock. I've hit a stream that was almost up to the doors deep in my 2WD access cab (which isn't -that- deep on a 2WD keep in mind) with enough force to take a wave of water over the hood and windshield, and I had 0 intake water problems.

And BONUS, I made it through the creek, pedal to the floor. Water was almost flowing into the doors I thought I was screwed!

 

I have a MK1 s/c kit, i promise im getting a lil more than a few hps from my setup lol. I have an injen shield on the way. I know the hydro shield i have on there now is only water resistant, but i will have an actual shield on there soon. I'd really like some help/opinions/suggestions on the MAF sensor situation lol

 

I think the best thing you can do is if you can find someone around you to switch MAF just to test if it is your MAF that's acting up.

Update:

I ended up getting another MAF sensire out of another taco with 26k mi. I put it in and drove around. Same issue. I got home and clean the maf with the sprayed it with cleaner and disconnected the batt to reset the ecu.

Same problem. Now that the MAF sensor has been eliminated in this whole ordeal, what would b next in the diagnosis process to start testing/replacing?

 

Well,... Got another update.

I went to the gas station and as i was pulling out the truck nearly stalled out and my AFR read 10.0 . I thought wtf, did i just stall out, but i was in first and when i got it going o threw a P0103 code. Which is the MAF signal output high. And i looked at my mass airflow g/s on my ultragauge and it was at 323, so yeh a bit high. And now im idling with AFRs in mid 13s
