100% agree but I used 2 vacations from 2022 that show it's a rather large inconvenience still at this time. So the nay sayers aren't wrong at this point and time. It isn't finished evolving yet and will absolutely get better. IMHO both EV and Combustion are the ideal mix.
Our tool bags will have to change, grow and evolve. But opposition is a positive thing!

In the high heat the heat pump would still need to run of course, so there still is some tax. But an EV hot-rodding trick if you will is to preheat the battery to the supercharging temps by setting the car to supercharge. When the battery is at supercharging temps it is more efficient and can charge more quickly, but also discharge significantly more quickly, meaning boosted 0-60 times and general acceleration performance increases over stock.

Rivian is still pretty new and figuring things out. Easy for them to upgrade it with an OTA software update.

 

I hope they don’t, I like to control it all how I want it. Sometimes I want the AC on because it’s hot out but the seat heater on because it helps with my back pain.

Currently EV is not a convenient all purpose vehicle for my needs. I cannot take it to the heliport and leave it for 50 days. I cannot effectively use it for a family vacation.
The inconvenience of my gasoline engine is the cost and frequency of fueling up but it's easy to find fuel.
Yes we compare .. it's how we determine if what we have currently is better or worse than the next option.
You do it shopping for food, tires literally everything.

I don't have one because it's not beneficial to me now. If you want 1 get 1. I don't have to.

No the heliports I fly out of are to work offshore. Gulf of Mexico. They barely count as heliports.

Then you just turn off the full auto setting and use the manual settings instead. It doesn’t take away any features or controls, just adds new automatic options designed to optimize performance and extend range if you you want to use them.

There are a few things to consider for parking EVs for an extended period of time. A parked EV is similar to a laptop running on battery power. The EV can go to “sleep” like a laptop and use almost no power, giving excellent battery life. However where people typically get in trouble is active security modes with video monitoring, which will prevent the vehicle from ever sleeping and will drain the battery over time, just like if you never allowed your laptop to sleep. Or people will check their EV in their app, which then wakes the EV up from sleep and runs the vehicle for some predetermined amount of time (maybe 2 hours). So if you do this a bunch of times it is like constantly waking up your laptop from its power conservation sleep mode to full power mode so you can check the battery stats maybe, causing it to use a bunch more power than it would otherwise. People that leave their EV for extended times often do one of these two things and then are surprised by the battery use, which is why it is so prominently discussed but at the same time largely self inflicted.

The one you really can’t control is temp. If you park in freezing temps, the vehicle will use some power to heat the battery above freezing which will impose a constant drain. In cold temps I’d have concern for sure as it cannot be disabled. In hot temps, Teslas and maybe others have cabin overheat protection, which will automatically cool the cabin if temps near ~100 degrees while the car is parked. For long term parking, you can toggle the feature off so you are not spending the battery power on cooling the cabin.

For myself, the longest I’ve gone without driving the Tesla while having it parked and sleeping in a 50 degree F garage without checking on it was 5 days, in that amount of time it showed 0% change in charge level. I have the car settings to automatically disable the active security (sentry) when at home since it is garaged.

Title of this thread is “Tacoma vs. Rivian” is it not? sSeems yo me it is based on comparing the two platforms. You could buy a Tacoma over a Rivian with enough cash left over for approximately 15+ years of fuel, and damn good track record of reliability, not to mention it is awfully convenient without having to reinvent the gawd damn wheel. Fuuuuck, I am getting old pretty fucking tired of change. Now what in the fuck do they want us to buy to keep the wheels of consumerism forever rolling. Fairly certain that Toyota (the company) will be around 50 years from now. While Rivian might become expensive yard art in 5. RJ Sacringe, hey man I am rooting for ya, be awesome if you could take down that egotistical asshole Musk, but man things aren’t looking good.

I took a break for a few months of this nonsense, came back, yep same fucking bullshit. We all need to go travel more, Hell… how do they expect us to convert to EVs if we don’t burn up all the petroleum first?

Just got back from AZ, was originally going drive, but with the winter storms coming in decided to fly last minute. Let’s say I had a Rivian and drove from Idaho to AZ and back, probably be stuck in the snowy mountains of Utah with a dead battery instead of at home in my favorite chair reading knuckleheads arguing with one another over never ending bullshit.

 

I was running low on gas today in an unfamiliar place. Guess what I had to do, use an app to get directions to a gas station. Isn’t the first time I’ve had to do to that. Happens on both sides.

 

You wouldn’t be stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery unless you’re an idiot. With just a little bit of planning you can drive an EV to nearly anywhere in the country, especially on main roads. It took me five minutes to build a route including charging stops that would take my Rivian from Boise to Phoenix without a problem even given reduced winter cold range issues. Definitely not as convenient as gas but still 100% doable.

The bullshitting is the best part of this forum, it’s why I stick around still. There’s always some interesting people and interesting conversations to be had.
