My job/portion of my trade does both. Sometimes both at the same time, solo, etc.

Mental strain... comes with damn near any job.
The physical... I will miss. But, I'm running out of time and options, and dealing with the doctors, is adding ANOTHER layer of mental strain, while they're playing games.

I'm not sure how much of a pay and bennie cut I can actually take. I've been trying to get as much stuff in order as possible, etc.

Can't do that in Massachusetts. The state said a snow day is a snow day. I am in full agreement with that.

Your pay cut will be the OT you're getting. Health insurance - are you on VA? Retirement - typically expect a 3-5% match on a 401k.

Just as a reference point for salary, ballpark

    upload_2023-2-28_8-27-26.jpg

Typical rule of thumb is expect to take home 60-65% of that, after all the deductions for taxes, insurance(s), retirement, etc.

Good. Snow isn't just "it's bad weather on the roads" it's also

    1. Let the kids play in the damn snow
    2. We gotta clean up the snow - kids and adults (students and teachers)
    3. It's snowing, people are dumb and drive into phone poles (or just ice on the lines can kill power too).

OT isn't even in the equation. I do what I can limit that. It is required sometimes, but, as a rule, I try to opt out. Let the young and hungry go for it. I live well enough within my means. Tough now, trying to make up for last year's... expenses.

As far as pay... I guess I need to explore further options...

Ah. My buddy drives fork trucks and with OT he makes twice as much as me, easy. Without we're about the same. So you'll probably land similar if you're looking at an engineer role. That said, you won't get an engineer role without an associates nowadays, unfortunately.

Logistically it's tough on my end too. I don't want the younger grades taking devices home every day. The damage we saw during COVID from that was nuts. If they only take them home during snow days, I would need to spend thousands on extra chargers since they're all installed in carts. The devices will last for a day, but since they probably used them during the preceding school day there wouldn't be an opportunity to charge them enough before they go home for the anticipated snow day. Plus all the families with garbage internet connections (or the ones that say their 1GB fiber is awful when the real problem is they're trying to cover their whole 4500 sq ft mini mansion with a single wireless router on the first floor). And the need to keep buying Zoom (or whatever) licenses for all teachers just to use them ~5 days per year.

Maybe. But at least it's supposed to start in the afternoon so I can get work in before it starts.

Those numbers are about 20k lower than I would have guessed for a position with those requirements.

My knowledge of IT pay skews things, though. Tech tends to pay well given the limited barrier to enter the field. Especially in the private sector.

Makes sense, hadn't thought about the Zoom licenses for instance.

Junior = 2 year associates. Not a 4 year BSME.
