2020 SR5 V6 has a constant ticking/knocking noise at idle and I also hear it during a cold start. It very well may be the direct injection or a bad vacuum pump but I figured I'd see what everyone on here says. I had a 2021 4 cylinder before this so I'm getting used to the V6. I"ll post the video link from my YouTube channel. It won't let me upload the video directly on here.

you can hear a "clatter" noise behind the ticking sound which makes me think it's a vacuum pump or possibly noise from the lifters.

Then sounds like you just need to tell the dealer what the issue is and have them fix it under warranty. report back with what they tell you.

I don't get that louder knocking sound from my 2020 sr5 v6, but if you listen carefully this engine does make more mechanical noises that conventional v6's I've heard. I have heard other 3.5 v6's that our water company tacoma's have, and some are just noisier than others. Haven't heard of any blowing up. It's likely just the nature of the beast.

That sounds pretty noisy, but then I've never heard mine through a phone recording

sounds normal, but if you don’t believe us take it to a mechanic. Also dont forget to search ticking noise on the search bar you will find a ton of posts that ask this question every month

Did you ever figure out what the noise is? I just got a 21 and I have the same “clacking” noise. Really makes me think something is wrong.

My Tacoma has always been noisy under the hood. There have been lots of discussions on this site about ticking noises, so I think it’s normal.

Curious if anyone has updates here on the clatter/ knock sound? Dropped 2022 TRD sport 24k miles at the dealership for a minor oil leak. Leak and knocking symptoms were simultaneous. Was told the injection cover was bad causing the leak and they are repairing. Told me the knock was normal. Went down there and recreated the knock by warming up engine, then idling while in drive. They checked it out in park, but was able to confirm was coming from the rear passenger side (I’m not crazy). The dealership said they are also now replacing the vacuum pump… they’ve had it two and half weeks and seems like I need to pull updates from them/ not real forthcoming. Is the crank issue above freak/ isolated or is this a known thing?

Just picked up a 2019 SR5 with 15k on it.

Have the same issue / ticking sound coming from the engine.

Might be normal but seems suspect.

lots of guys say with Tacoma’s - if it’s ticking then it can take a licking.

    tight lines !
