Charging and range will always be an issue. Once those two things are resolved it's all downhill.

    IMHO:

Range of an EV needs to be at a minimum on it's worst day of it's worst drive 450 miles. Most ICE cars and Hybrid SUVs have a reasonable range of 500 miles and EV's need to be right there beside them.

Charging times need to be reduced to 5 minutes for 80% capacity. People love to say oh they just get something to eat or go shopping etc while their EV charges which is fine but thats because EV's are less than 1% of cars on the road. How many of us have had to sit and wait 3 cars deep at a gas pump because of traffic. Imagine having to wait an hour just to be able to charge. So enjoy the lack of lines now but CA is already seeing issues.

Once that is done I'll be in.

My Tacoma has a 300 mile range …

the main issue with Evs is still charge times on trips. Don’t see that changing anytime soon.

YMMV....using the same metrics i calculated for other cars, the range on a new Tacoma is 483.

Most I have pushed my Tacoma is 385 and still had some gallons left.

My Wife's Lexus gets close to 600 miles

My 3rd gen could do 350 miles tops on the highway, my R1T will do about 320 miles in conserve 2wd mode.

Yep sounds about right. Initial range is comparable the main issue is still road tripping for Evs. No easy way to fix that unfortunately.

And another point is you’re compromised to about 60% of the battery during the road trips. As you can’t charge to 100%(time effectively) and usually shouldn’t go below 20%. Effective battery is basically from 20-80. Vs a gasoline car that is 20-100, you’re 20% worse off from the get go

Breaking the 80/20 rule for a road trip 2-3 times a year isn’t going to be catastrophic to the health of your battery. If that is what you are normally doing, than you will definitely see it impact your overall capacity/range over time.

No the point is you can’t really time effectively charge to 100% on a road trip. It’ll take 30 min to go 20 to 80 and another 30 min to go 80-100. So it’s just a waste of time.

So your actual range is just about 60% of the maximum during road trips

What about the usable range below 20%?

I would assume the same “safety” margin as a gasoline car. Usually you don’t want to run below 1/5th of a tank.

You don’t really want to go below 20%. Some Evs start restricting performance also once you dip below certain % thresholds.

Same. I go about 320 miles before filling up which usually only takes around 3 minutes. If you could get a full charge in 10 to 15 minutes then I would think about getting an EV but otherwise it’s not going to work with my travels.

390 should be enough for most
