You’re missing the point. The point is that Toyota and Lexus make a bunch of other SUVs that the majority of users could switch to. They only make two pickup trucks. Also the Highlander and RAV4 sell 3-400K vehicles each a year. Those are Toyota’s big money makers. They would be financially fine if they decided to end the 4Runner.

 

I think I read they sold about 125k 4 runners last year which is the highest it has been. I don't think they needed to make the Corolla cross its not to much cheaper than the Rav. I would like to see a Toyota Maverick type truck. I don't think the 4 runner would come to an end it has a cult following like the Tacoma

 

I didn't miss any point, other than the Lexus GX series, they would be giving up on an entire category of vehicle in the marketplace The Rav 4 and Highlander do not compete in that category, There is a difference between pulling a model and moving another in its place in a category, and giving up an entire category of buyer. The closest thing they have to taking its spot is the Lexus GX, that sold 25K last year vs the 4 Runners 121K.

If for a second we entertain giving up a category of buyer, the question that would be asked is this...Take the Rav 4 and Highlander numbers you mentioned 300-400K....Would ending the 4 runner add an additional 125K to those numbers....I would say no, those 125K customers would buy something else. Why would a company give up those sales without something to take its place, that probably would not be the best financial decision.

Now...if we were talking about ending the 4 runner and bringing one of the lower trim Land Cruisers to the US to be placed in that category, it would be a totally different story.

2021 was the best year, its been pretty constant and steady, and those numbers probably match pretty closely to manufacturing capacity.

 

Oh yeah I forgot it's on the Ram 1500 platform.

 

Gas was cheap as was interest and everyone was looking to “adventure”. I don’t think 23 will crack 100k

 

Grand Highlander

 

You are probably right, so far the pace is off, The magic question is it a manufacturing pace issue or sales pace issue. It will probably become more clear at the end of the first quarter.

 

What does the Grand Highlander do?...make a bigger minivan concealed as an SUV? Once again...different category....

The Grand highlander competes with the Subaru Ascend and a couple of others...do you see the difference between those vehicles and the 4 runner and why it is in a different category. If not, its not worth discussing from my end, I do this for a living, and realize I have a different prospective than others.

 

If they weren't selling you would see incentives... 4runner and Tacoma are notorious for never having incentives.

 

As far as 4Runner quality I can say the paint on my 2017 was a lot thicker and better quality from the factory than my 2020. My 2017's factory radio sounded better than the 2020 to as the 2017 put out the same wattage to all door and back hatch speakers.

4Runner became the cool soccer mom car the last few years. I had no idea they still made them until they started popping up everywhere around my neck of the woods about 5 years ago. I am sure Toyota will keep making them since the profit margins are undoubtedly quite high and there is no reason to believe they wont continue to move 100K+ units per year unless gas prices skyrocket.

 

Search for Toyota 4 runner on instagram and you won't see as many soccer mom trucks...lol. I don't know where there are more lifestyle/overland builds the 4Runner side or Tacoma...

 

My wife's daily is a 2018 4Runner Limited. Excellent visibility, interior room, great for road trips, and I actually like its 5-speed transmission better. I can see why people set them up for overlanding. I also recently put new shoes on as it did have ugly 20" wheels. She use to drive a Jeep Liberty and at 8 years it was becoming expensive to repair. I totally recommend the 5th generation 4Runner and I'm not surprised why they're still selling so well. Mpg isn't all that great (17 city, 19 highway), but it's quality built and I know we'll still have it in 10-15 years with just regular maintenance.
