Thinking of installing a safe t cap, TAC-155U-L drivers side rear frame rail where the bumper attaches on the drivers side. Frame is rotted on the side of the rail and broke free when weight was applied to the bumper, at the rear bumper mount bolt. Would this interfere with the installation of a receiver hitch if I only do 1 side?

    Welcome To the Forum!!!

I venture that is just the tip of the ice berg. This is going to get expensive.

Do you have enough good steel to weld the safetycap on??

Have you done the hammer test on the whole frame??

I thought my frame was bad!

    Best of Luck!!!

Don't think a saf-t-cap will fix that bud.

I plan on pulling the bed this summer, I know there’s a few more spots but it’s not beyond reasonable repair. It is truck number 3 in the yard, behind a 2001 tundra and 2023 high country so it’s just a fun project for the kids

I think it looks worse if you don’t understand the pic, the big circular hole is the very end of the frame, the part that’s heading downhill is the bumper bracket. Someone had a ball on the bumper and tried to pull a trailer loaded with firewood that was much too heavy for the truck to begin with, the other side the bumper bracket snapped

It doesn’t really look like there’s enough solid metal left to weld a cap to though. That frame looks rusted through.

Rust denial. Hate to see it happen.

In all seriousness. You need to hammer test the frame, especially the area around the forward spring hanger and shock mount.

    4 run, 2 don't
    Bed off.

Being me, I'd carefully gather measurements of key components and then chop the last foot or two of the frame off at both ends.

Redo the rear with C channel and tie it in the clean part of your frame where you chopped it off.

Could even add a crossmember in lieu of the factory spare tire holder to reinforce everything.

Finish off with round tube bent as a cheap bumper and call it a day.

Sadly that would never pass inspection here in Pa

I live in the SW, so forgive me for my lack of knowledge when it comes to this rust stuff, but can someone tell me how the OP's truck can have rust that bad at the rear of the frame, and yet claim all the known problem areas further forward are solid? Doesn't seem to add up

I never said it was solid, may have said repairable?

This is what should have been done. Cut and Remove all rusted and damaged steel. Clean areas for patch panel to be welded with acetone I recommend.9AB777E8-CD95-4BED-AE9B-7E2FA256D9AA.jpg
