Total engine hours?

Any way to see the total engine hours?

I use my truck for work and it idles a lot, curious if there was any way to view that data on the Tacoma, if it even logs that information at all.

Not sure the purpose of wanting to monitor total hours … we don’t have Motorcyle engines and don’t need to be rebuilt at certain hours of use . I guess if you wanted to maybe a part from a razor modified to the Tacoma but you will still need someone to design a program for it .

 

Its a truck not a boat lol.

 

Pretty standard thing to see on full sizes. Might have to dive through menus or something to find it on these things

 

I can see were it could be useful, if it idles a lot lot you might want to do oil changes based on hours not miles.

 

I know on the commercial engines I work on, Key-on time and Engine-on time are both available through the ECM. Wouldn't surprise me if it was available through these ECM's. Unfortunately I have not explored that yet. Maybe @tonered can answer it.

 

I believe all that is in there is Distance and Time from the last DTC Reset. I don't think there are any total counters.

But supposedly, reading the Event Data Recorder has all data since new. I think it was @daks that did it? I tried and it timed out on me for some reason.

 

I agree, having access to total hours would come-in handy, but if the Tacoma has one I've never found it. Ford has been including one in the Super Duty's since ~'06, even my '04 Silverado has one. They come-in handy at work since we do oil changes based on hours run rather than miles driven. On my Silverado it's more for my curiosity more than anything else.

One neat bit of trivia, according to our fleet mechanic at work if you take the engine hours and multiply by 33 it gives you a fairly (give or take) accurate translation into miles, so if a piece of equipment has 7,000 hours that equates to roughly 230,000 miles. Useless info for most but like I said at work I go by it. Ford too since in the past I've had a warranty repair denied because the truck was over on engine hours but not on miles or years.

OP, if you want to you can always add an aftermarket one. Hardline makes a great digital one which has a long-life battery (I'm up to 15 years on one of them!) which just requires you wrap a lead (a thin piece of wire) around one of your spark plug leads. I have one on all of my off-road toys and base maintence needs off of them.

 

I have sort of seen this when monitoring average speed. For normal driving, it seems to hang out right around 30mph or so unless on a long trip. Seeing an average speed for a tank above 60 is kinda cool but very rare.

It makes me think of the speeds of various things like freight, people, etc. Stupid stuff a mind does. Hahaha!

 

Yes thats stored in the Vehicle Control History, but it just tracks by Elapsed time since last key cycle, Date/time, The Event, Odometer in miles.

I think you chose the closest one to what he is looking for which is the time from last reset.

i have 8 diff types..............NO requirement

idle hours hurt most any engine..................at idle few are running at an optimin range

known fact most engines are Very INefficient at idle................results in abject pollution

air cooled aircraft engines keep track of TOTAL hours

construction equiptment with NO odometre keep track of hours run

if U idle Ur engine a lot it does present certain issues

it decreases total engine life.....................alternative is using a APU

 

When you're buying a used car and they tell you that it has all highway miles you can determine if that's true or not. mileage÷engine hours=average speed over life of engine. Closer to 70mph the better There's a short going around about it.

But honestly, like road dog mentioned, it ain’t a two stroke motor where the life of the motor is going to be WOT — 10,000-13,000 rpm’s in the cut. Soon enough, stuff starts to wear. Ring(s), nikasil, piston, etc.

 

You havent owned a real truck obviously. Ive had a few Super Dutys and they will all display hours.

 

You are trying to solve for two unknowns. You need a matrix.
In my world, a year equals a bit over 2000 hours.

 

A real truck is a semi, not a bloated F series. Don't be one of those guys
