Thanks for all of the good talk on the off grid GPS. I ultimately decided on picking up a cheap used phone and will run Gaia off of that on my handlebars and then keep my everyday phone and garmin inreach on my person. I was able to pick up a Google Pixel 4 XL for $100 from Swappa.

Dude tell me about it. The other benefit from riding dirt when younger to coming back now is also being able to spend the dough on the quality shit that I could NOT afford when I was 15-16 lol

No please keep it going, def not enough dual sport/dirt talk in here. I run this shirt style one based on rec's from a lot of friends who rock it. I used to only run elbow pads only before so it's giving that extra protection in the chest and back I never had. I do wish I had more forearm protection but that's the only gripe. I basically got thrown into a tree pretty hard this past weekend that made me wish I had more.

At the speeds I ride it's more than enough though cause I'm still :turtleride:

Right?! It's nice being able to drop all of this dough on gucci shit. Plus I tell myself it'll help keep me safer in my old age. :homer:

That's how I reasoned it too. My wife was like you said you went into the dirt to be safer (less street riding) and you've been in the hospital/hurt more now than you ever have been before.

I look at the money spent on quality gear as more of an investment. I'm far from wealthy but dropping a few hundred on a helmet is still going to be cheaper than one day in the ICU if shit goes bad. I also have this like for solid foods so full face or modular for me. That being said I still watch for when stuff goes on sale or closeout. I don't need the newest model of stuff and it it was top of the line a couple of seasons ago I don't think it turns into trash when the new line comes out.

Agreed on the investment part. I can afford it thanks to the sale of my truck so I have no problem at all buying the nicer stuff if it will help protect me. I even picked up these nice knee braces because I enjoy walking and want to keep my knees in one piece. A little overkill, but worth it for me anyways.

Out of those, definitely the Arai. If your head shape is intermediate oval, I recommend looking into Shoei helmets as well. The RF-1400 or GT Air II are great options. The RF-SR is pretty good as well.

I already got these ones but I appreciate the offer. I tried them on yesterday, pretty damn comfy.

No worries. Maybe @cynicalrider want them, or someone else.

With all this talk of knee braces, what's your thoughts on this?

I have never worn them and do realize anything can happen with any piece of equipment. I personally think it was just a freak occurrence.

I absolutely wont run another standard old school over the jersey chest protector ever again. I have been rocking a fox full back and tailbown armor suit with integrated shoulder and elbow pads for a long while and its saved me once or twice, especially the lower back / tailbone protection. Yes its a little more bulky but I can spend all day in it and never really gets in the way.

Good video and I would agree that it's just a freak thing as everyone and every injury is vastly different, there are so many variables. Personally it doesn't sway me from running the braces.

I have an older version of this FOX chest protector. I like that everything is built in elbow, shoulder, back, and chest. You can just throw a jersey over it, plus it is mesh so it is cooler. It has saved me a few times on the track and riding single track.

I think I would wear them if I were ripping around in the dirt.

Those C frames were the only ones I ever eyed too so I could grip the tank... I run EVS TP 199's and they have always been more than enough protection for anything I have ever needed. The locking out of the knees has always been my concern with the braces.

You know whats crazy the vid you posted sheds some like on my experience. I partially tore an mcl on a standup jetski a few years back (dipped my foot sideways facing out in the water at 20mph or so and pop goes my mcl) and went man "If i had athletic knee braces that probably wouldnt of happened".

1.5 yrs later after pt and rehab on the knee with pretty good confidence and strenght in that knee, i set out with my fancy K4 Pod knee braces that I had bought shortly after the initial accident to go snow skiing (im an avid snow skier 20-30+ days on the snow usually per season) - this hadnt been the first time out skiing since the jetski injury. Cruising along on an easy connector trail just enjoying the sights, caught and edge got a little wonky. POP GOES MY KNEE again. And not a little pop.

A pop and pain SO BAD that for the first time in my life all I could do is uncontrollably scream in pain for about a minute straight. I collected myself after the initial shock, and was able to carefully ski back down to my truck, but I knew something was BAD this time.

Like the guy in the video, I also had a tibial plateau fracture. It wasnt nearly as bad as his with the full chunk, but I still fractured the joint surface of the knee on my lower leg bone. I also highly sprained my MCL and bruised my femur. So im also torn on the knee braces at this point.
