I've seen a few second gen limos for sale on marketplace, both in the states and in cannuckistan that have been swapped. Would be a pretty dope setup

Yeah, DCLB MT swap would be killer.

SC 4.0 in my ‘05 RC could be fun too.

RCSB w ev? Hahah. That would look pretty ugly.

This is an old thread, but I never saw it and I just read the entire thing for fun.

It is absolutely possible to manual swap a Limited. Push button start is not a hindrance at all, it will work just fine. You wouldn't be able to easily use the clutch start cancel, because without more effort you'd likely still be starting the truck with the brake pedal instead of the clutch pedal (either wired up to just require the brake pedal, or for a bit more safety, both the brake and clutch pedal). Might be able to get around that, but then you'd still be limited to the ECU controlling starting time, so yeah, just skip it. The ECU doesn't care if it's smart key or not.

    The rest... not too bad.

Thanks Jeff. That’s what I suspected based on the wiring diagram. So pretty much like any other MT swap. Hopefully someone finds this helpful and will tackle this to open up the possibility for everyone else.

4cyl manual doesn't come with a double cab. You can get the auto or 6cyl. But yea I suppose maybe the auto would be the best option for my use case. Manual is cool and better but it would ruin some of the built in tech to swap it. Just had this thought as well. The 6cyl is also pretty viable if costs are not a limitation for me anymore as well.

That makes the 2016, 2017 still possibilities in the used market, the current body appearance & interior. But those don't have Double Cabs far as I can tell and if they do every single one is not on the market. Pretty sure it doesn't exist though because when looking at 05-15 there are none as well.

I know everyone's ideal Tacoma is going to be different but mine would be a less frills, efficient machine with a bit of manual fun & a double cab, short bed. I'd keep a flush canopy on it most of the time, remove the canopy when I have to haul stuff to build buildings & repair houses. Pretty much the best vehicle all around for my style & purpose that I can think up anyway.

Then get a six cylinder manual. There's really no sense in using the Four to haul around the heavier double cab truck.

The double cab is like 100lbs heavier. I have a DCSB with a 4-cylinder carrying about 600lbs of offroad armor, a wedge camper on 33’s and it’s perfectly happy to do it. It’s not a rocket ship though. It’s certainly slow. Everyone won’t like this setup, but it’s adequate for my needs.

The 4.0 and my 5 speed is what I desire. I would trade someone in a heartbeat. If only the transmissions were compatible.

There are a number of manual transmissions that were used behind the 1GR, both 5-speed (R150, H150, and M155) and 6-speed (RA60, RA61).

The R155, R155F, and R156F from the Tacoma 2.7L can be bolted up behind the 4.0L in the Tacoma. You would need the following parts to do so:

    31111-60350 - Bellhousing
    33301-60130 - Input Shaft
    33131-60080 - Bearing Retainer
    31204-60110 - Release Fork
    90363-12002 - Pilot Bearing
    31470-60330 - Slave Cylinder
    36201-71020 - Transfer Input Shaft

I could also provide the part numbers for the clutch lines, hoses, and brackets, but most people would probably just make their own, I suspect. The Tacoma has the clutch line go from the firewall to the engine then down to the transmission, while the Prado platform the line goes down to the transmission along the body then over, so it would be a lot more intrusive to install on the Tacoma.

I am not entirely sure on how the shifter will line up, it might need slight modification to the floor, but not much. The transmission mount and drive shafts will all bolt up without issue.

Oh, for reals? I thought the output was all different since the combo was never a factory option. I have the 2.7 and 5MT right now, I think R155 (it's a 2005 RC Prerunner). So if I found someone crazy enough to trade it might actually be possible? I bet it's way easier to swap transmissions than engines though, but I had previously assumed that mounting the 1GR even in a RC, would be doable.

The 4.0 goes zooom, the 2.7 goes ....

Well, offer stands, anyone who must have the 2.7 for your DC and wants to swap...

Or, perhaps it's more trouble to stuff the 2.7 into the 6MT for some reason? Something makes me think Jeff knows the part numbers for that.

    Dayum.... :101010:

When you say the combo was never offered, I'm assuming you mean a RC 4.0? (Ideally with 3 pedals)

Yes, AFAIK, 98 was the last V6’er MT RC?

But 5spd is sorta a thing too for me because throwback small truck w R on the R side feels very rrrretro cool.

I don’t hate on the 6MT though, I like that one too.

Will the RA60 bolt up to the 2.7L? I feel like an extra gear between 3rd and 4th would get this snail moving a bit better. Also, 6th is a little lower so I could hold speed up steeper grades (though I 4.88’s and already turn pretty high RPM cruising)

It’s a one-way street. The RA6x does not have a separate bellhousing and cannot be bolted to a TR engine without some sort of custom adapter.

The RC6x would potentially be a better option, but again an adapter would be required.
