Planning to put an air horn on my 99 pre runner. The horn I’ve chosen is a wolo 845 road warrior. I want to mount it up front and facing forward so that I don’t have to extend any wires to the center or rear of my truck. To anyone and everyone that’s installed an air horn, what would be the best place to put it? I want to get this right so I don’t end up crushing the horn or accidentally damage the wires because they got caught in a moving part.

Do you have or plan on a winch??

    Stock bumper or after market??

Just where do you need the sound of the horn having the most impact??

I find the best location is pointing front on the roof!

second would be down low with nothing in front of the horn to mute or deflect the sound.

Downside is all the road dirt and water .

What if I mount it to the subframe and put a cover on the front to keep all the road junk from getting inside the horn? Keeps it pointing forward and makes wiring it somewhat easy.

    On a train.

I'm against road rage devices on general principle.

How does one tell the difference between a device used in warning and road rage? Serious Question.

Maybe my friends daughter would still be alive if a vehicle with a louder horn could have attracted her attention .

Serious answer. I don't think air horns are safer. I think they're more dangerous, and that's even if they are used in earnest.

There's attention grabbing loud, and there's jump-scare loud. Air horns are the latter. I've been air-horned, and I've observed others on the receiving end of one. I'll tell you what happens. It sends the person you are honking at into blind confusion for those critical seconds that they should be reacting. It will either jump scare someone into a no-react panic, or it will have them looking around in confusion for the phantom 18 wheeler that's beating down on them.

What they are absolutely not doing is associating that sound with a compact pickup OR that there is an eminent collision coming from a small/midsize vehicle. The brain will take one-to-several seconds to gather itself and make the connection. And that is far, far too late to react the way you want or need them to.

If you want a louder horn, fine. Buy an electric two-tone that sounds like a car and doesn't deafen others into stupidity. Don't get a train horn, and definitely don't make the reasoning that train horns are safer. They aren't.

Arguably, different use case. If you're hearing an emergency siren, you're hearing it on approach from far off, and should have time to think and react.

If my horn is sounding it means we're down to milliseconds to assess and avoid.

Sorry to hear about the friends kiddo. That's tough.

I also think just where one lives plays a big part.

I would never use a Horn like that in town to me a town is 5000 people or bigger no reason to be driving more then 25mph.

Jealous. I'm in the middle of the big city. I had ex in-laws that hailed from Duncannon. I like that part of the country, it's nice.

I'm of the very unusual attitude that if I'm on the horn, it's a result of failure on my end. Even if I'm legally right and they're wrong. Doesn't matter. Some people make mistakes, others are jerks. And if one pays close attention, they can see warning signs and position themselves away from risky behavior. Even in the mad-max battleground of downtown Dallas, if I have to honk, it's because I didn't see something coming. Thinking like that has resulted in a dramatic decrease of horn reliance even in a town of 6.5 million. :cookiemonster:

Mount it under the cab on the driver side on the frame rail. That way you won't use it much.
