$5700 on Upgrades? Worth it?

That’s only a couple hundred bucks a year. Not worth it. Mods first. Next.

Yes indeed. I went -12 offset with no spacers and rub moderately in reverse or on compression. Doing a CMC next week, like it or not. Regardless of what I’d read, wish I’d researched more.

 

Congrats on the purchase. I imagine you financed it, at 22. I have spent a lot of money on modding cars and trucks from age 15 to 37 (now). My Taco has a total of about 50k in it-all parts. I have done all the work myself. The most notable difference after all that time, energy, and money, was turning a 36k truck into a 50k truck that's worth 38k to the right person at the right time. I don't think most mods are worth their cost, as in, you can't significantly alter the performance from stock in a generally meaningful way without going down some rabbit holes. Rear springs and tunes are probably the exception. Otherwise, you can easily spend 150% of what the truck is worth to make it 10% better. Learn from my (repeated) mistakes.

 

I got all this advice while I was his age and younger. Never listened to any of it and kick myself all the time. It's hard to see from 22 how much your life and priorities will change in the next 5-7 years, and how insignificant these kinds of things become.

 

I am at about 20k in mods at this point but I bought my Tacoma with the intention of building a overland rig. That is always a pricey endeavor. Build it the way you want. I would probably take those on one at a time. Suspension, then wheels/tires. Do the suspension yourself. If you don't own tools then buy what you need. You will save yourself thousands of install charges if you do it yourself.

 

Honestly I would say forget the lift/wheels and just slap some 265/75R16s on there and call it a day.

I would agree with this post, if I was looking to buy a used Tacoma, I would want one that was mostly stock as I think that makes the resale value better. One has been all modded out makes me think it’s had a hard life and I wouldn’t want to purchase it. Something to think about

 

OP, if you put mods on your truck, make sure they’re ones that you can quickly remove and get your truck back to stock

 

I think for now, this is what I’ll do! If I need the extra mods in the future, I’ll learn to do them all myself.

Any recommendations on specific aggressive looking 265/75R16’s?

 

Any Mud terrain tire looks aggressive. What are you using the truck for?

 

Get a couple estimates and that will determine if it is overpriced. If you are price conscious, I would recommend looking into installing it yourself.

 

thanks for the advice! I think I’ll upgrade the tires right now, and do any extra mods myself later on if I still want. After purchasing my vehicle, I discovered one of my tires has a defect and needs to be replaced asap. So might as well upgrade them all right now.

Also, I’m fortunate to have a good job. Im able to save 80% of my income, and I have built a pretty solid savings / investment portfolio. While I could comfortably buy these mods, I think I’d learn a whole lot more by doing them myself when I’ve got the time!

 

Some moderate off roading trails. I’d also like tires that are strong in snow.

 

If this your first Off-road rig. Just enjoy it stock for the first 1-2years. Driver experience > mods

invest in recovery gear too hahahaha

 

I’ll give you the validation you want…life is short, pay the money, get it done, enjoy the heck out of it. Live with your decision.
Sure it’s a little overpriced and sure you could do it yourself. $5700 for that isn’t the worst thing you could do with the money. No one’s including tax. Everyone assumes you have all the tools you need and time to do it and skill.
Just pay it and get it done.

 

Dumb comments like this get so many people into trouble..stop it.

 

Rule of thumb is anything you add on will only return a fraction (if anything) when you go to sell or trade, and cost of labor adds zero value to your truck. Usually “package deals” are an easy way to get overcharged on both parts & labor.

Best advice is separately look for the very best deals on the wheels/tires/parts from a reputable seller, do as much of the labor as possible yourself, and farm out the work that might be above your pay grade. Also pay careful attention to what may later affect or even void your warranty.

End result is it’s gonna look awesome- enjoy!

 

I probably skip the wheels and invest in some UCAs.
