Second time this is happening. The first time wrote it off as cold weather, today much warmer so not sure that's the issue....

THE ISSUE: Car start, warm up for a few mins, take off the parking brake, put into reverse, backs out fine, then when putting into drive it feels like it only partially engages, traction loss light comes on, one wheel feels like it's not getting power..... put back into reverse, seems to operate normally. The only resolve has been to keep putting it into all the gears 10 times, engage 4wd, and back to 2wd, and eventually, it just works.

2019 Tacoma ORTRD with 77k on it, never had any issues w trans.

Line pressures in the trans are higher in Reverse than in forward gears. Check the fluid level and condition, to start.

Sounds like one of the rear brakes is sticking / not releasing when you release the parking brake. Are you a manual is that why you always use the parking brake?

Next time it happens see if one wheel is spinning but not the other

The first time this happened buddy got out and yes confirmed and could also hear one spinning other not doing anything, traction control light comes on. The initial thought was stuck parking brake, so lift and lowered that a few times as well. I use it out of habit and live in NW Wyoming so it sits on ice, just a creature of habit for extra braking. But it goes into reverse no problem so that felt like it ruled out stuck parking brake.

If I recall they are designed such that they grab with more force in the fwd direction. The truck may be able to overpower in rev but not fwd. If you park on level ground try not using the parking brake for a while.

Block the front wheels then put into neutral. Jack under the rear diff until both rear wheels are off the ground. Do they both spin forward/back freely?

I'm in the frozen brake camp. You can try going to 4Lo and hitting the rear locker. Don't whomp on it, just gentle power.

reverse is no prob, but then back to drive and no go, like one of the wheels isnt getting any power to it, then reverse again no problem... so that felt like it ruled out parking brake sticking. Unfortunately its always been when im backing out of a parking spot with no feasible way chance while people honk to move.... only thing that worked was several rotations through the gears, 4wd cycle etc.. then eventually something gives and its back to normal.

Pay attention to the transmission indicator in the gauge cluster screen. If you intermittently see a discrepancy between the screen and the shifter handle position, then the transmission range sensor is suspect.

Parking brakes (like classic drum brakes) are much stronger in forward than reverse. If you could drive it in reverse for awhile it should free up the brakes for forward motion as well.

I’m also in the stuck drum brakes camp. 4lo and gentle power should break em loose. Giving the tire/wheel a good solid kick worked once too.

OK forward does not work, what happens in forward does the engine struggle trying to move it? Or does it do nothing? Lot of maybe's here need a little more info.

Full throttle it's going to spin the opposite wheel or in 4WD it will drag the truck. Just not enough info. It could even be an issue with the forward clutch pack.

Ok I’m also in the parking brake freezing up camp.

You have an offroad, so next time that happens flip it into 4 low and turn on the rear locker. If you can get the locker to engage you will find out very quickly if one of the rear wheels has a sticky parking brake.
