Been curious about this for a while, I’ve got a warn recovery kit it comes with a tree saver, tow strap, snatch block and d ring. I’m pretty positive the snatch block is designed to be used with a cable winch line, but curious if anyone had any experience with using it or if it’s possible to use it with a synthetic winch line. Just looking around a bit it seems like if it’s never been used for cable it could be fine to use with synthetic winch line.

I had one when I ran cable It was great for that. I gave it to a buddy when I switched to synthetic. Being able to carry a soft shackle and one the plastic doughnut rope winches is pretty nice going up through the brush running lines.

I could see that for sure that warn snatch block is a lunk of steel. I’ve got a bunch of soft shackles and synthetic line stuff, one snatch block specifically for synthetic.. just kind of curious if the situation ever dictated that I need a second snatch block if I would be able to use the warn snatch block in addition.

You can totally use the warn snatch block with synthetic winch line. As you said it would be best to not use it with steel cables to avoid nicks that could damage the synthetic line.

In all honesty for the price of that snatch block you can buy two from Harbor freight that are more than enough and use one for synthetic and one for steel if it were to arise.

Hey I’ve got a similar snatch block of anyone wants it. It’s heavy as hell to ship but in pristine condition. DM for photos tomorrow

    OP,

This style of snatch block comes from the logging world where they most definitely use steel on these. I've used the variety from Skookum over the years with synthetic for various reasons and they work just fine. All I'll say is that the sheave portion should have low rolling friction to be used with synthetic. You don't want to drag your rope over the sheave under light load conditions without it spinning. Otherwise, if it spins well go to town. Those things can take a serious beating and keep working, but they are HEAVY.

Be safe most of all. If you don't like winching with it, leave it in the garage as a conversation piece and find something else that fits your needs.
