my reasoning is that our 100lb GSD isn’t getting up into the tent so a platform under the bed would be the ticket. Since he is the fiancés baby, she would not allow him to be sealed in a box the whole night. Having the inside “bunk” open to the bed of the truck while we are sleeping is what I’m looking for.

Is it the same setup? Anybody can build a frame and put a tent on top, the differences are likely in the details and build quality

Really need to call GFC like Ryan mentioned and ask them why they're pricing is higher than the others. They'd probably love to be given a chance to explain.

No what I'm saying is that GFC is CHEAPER than everyone else. Its a positive, just a weird phenomenon!

Yeah they're different. I'm not much for camping the GFC looks cool, I'd pick up a used one for a long bed if anyone was selling one, chances are I'd never use it.

I like the Sprinter build outs, but they are pricey.

You can buy my GFC. No lead time. :)

I'm only selling because I got a long bed, and it no longer fits.

I think that would be pretty hard to achieve with any of the options currently available if both you and the fiancé are sleeping up there, the only camper I know of that had the bunk open to the bed full time was the Flippac I believe, but as I recall those are discontinued.

If airflow is the concern, the bed is not airtight. But if isolation is the concern...i don't think there's any way around it unless you can find a used Flippac

Sorry I misread. Maybe they got their production streamlined and are cranking them out faster. All I've heard is good things about GFC

Super pacific, vagabond, 4wc, and topo toppers all have the bunk open to the bottom. Right now I am looking at topo.

Hm it's been a while since i researched them so my info must be out of date. Do they all have a substantially larger sleeping area footprint? If so, then I could see it. otherwise, i find it hard to see it being comfortable having the bunk opened and still sleeping two people up there, but if you guys can make it work more power to ya. Seems like it'd be cramped to sleep in any of them without one section of paneling.

We just need/want an opening doesn’t need to be large. The gfc has none unless it’s just one person in the bunk. The others offer a couple of feet of open area without having to remove any bunk panels. Take a look at an image of a gfc, the cab over on a dcsb barely makes it to the mid point of the rear door. The cab over on the others goes up to/beyond the b pillar.

They arent that expensive to build, about $2000 in materials and maybe another $2000 in labor.

I would NOT pay what they are charging now nor would I buy another brand for 20% more.

But like all bullshit sales pitches they will name drop material, and quality of labor..

$7k really? Didnt even pay GFC that much. I mean I wouldn't expect much more than $4-5k for mine. If someone wants to buy mine for $7k they can pick it up now.

I own a gfc lol. it comes a couple inches short of where the rear and front doors meet (B pillar)

Looking at the others, they all seem fairly similar? Did some quick googling to find out the sleeping area sizes:

    GFC: 50" x 90"
    Super pacific: 52" x 80"
    4WC: 81" x 66"
    Topo Topper: 51" x 80"
    Vagabond: 48" x 80"

I guess that extra 10" (plus some since the other options are a bit longer) the GFC has , is where the other campers have the opening down to the bed/panels to fill? I'm sure some have more since as you said they aren't all the same length.

with how the GFC panels rest in the top platform, I could see it being pretty easy to build your own panels to replace the two rearmost ones in the GFC so you could have that gap, and would probably come cheaper than buying one of the other options, though the topo topper seems very competitively priced with GFC. But I'd also understand wanting to buy one ready to go rather than DIY'ing for yourself.

I'd be interested to see what the total length of the wedge is for each of them. I think it is a combination of a longer wedge and having a shorter sleeping platform that allows the pass through space.

    yeah that would make sense.

    GFC: 53" x 97"
    Super Pacific: 56" x 110"
    4WC: Unknown
    Vagabond: Unknown
    Topo: Unknown

bit frustrating some don't list their full dimensions, but it would seem you're correct, as the last 3 are all at least as long if not longer than the GFC, exterior-wise. If you really want the most space for bunk AND opening a Kimbo camper would be a solid choice, if you can stomach the price, shape, and destroyed MPG lol

Sorry about the thread hijack OP

Topo is somewhat local to me, in a decent price range, and kinda checks all other boxes. Vagabond apparently has had some issues based on what I've seen here.

All I think of when I see Kimbos is this guy from Futurama.

On the internet, people negotiate for final price.

And you did pay more than $7k for it.

I paid $5600 and inflation is a joke if you are using it to negotiate a used item. Good luck though you can list it for whatever price you want.

Can order a brand new one for 8k and get it in 4 weeks. The ship of jumping 3-6 month lead times and pandemic adventure has sailed.

Anyone wanna buy a modified Tacoma for $70k after inflation, no low balls I know what I got!
