Dearlship selling engine mounts, post engine work vibration.

Where are you measuring that you get 10°?

My engine valve cover slants to passenger side. Photo is leveled to front cross-member that supports the radiator.

Sounds about right. Mine leans a bit but I don’t care to even try to measure how much. It’s been like that since day 1.

I don’t know the actual angle.
But it does slant. And it is obvious by just looking at it.

Going by the slant is NOT how you diagnose engine mounts. It can be a clue, but the “slant” has nothing to do with it.

Thank you. I'm new to this site, so having difficulty posting a photo but put the angle finder in front of air handler next to the oil cap.

[IMG]I've looked on utube and see good videos on how to diagnose and replace. I'm just worried, dealer selling me something I don't need, to direct attention away from, vibration, lower RPMs, and engine bogging in 2nd gear, since engine work done to replace vvti gear.

I put the angle finder on valve cover, in front of air handler by the oil cap.

    Having trouble loading a photo.

I understand what you are doing.
But why are you worried about the angle of the slant?
Did the dealership lead you to believe the engine mounts were bad based on the slant of the engine?

An engine vibration could be caused by a bad engine mount.
But not a low idle or cause bogging in 2nd hear.

Best way to check mounts is to power-brake it in drive and reverse while somebody watches the engine under the hood. There's an acceptable amount of twisting allowed, too much is a bad mount. Usually accompanied by clunking

Sounds like they are throwing parts at a problem they don't fully understand. I would get a second opinion and find a different shop. If you don't have anyone that can recommend a good shop, post your location and maybe someone may be in that area that can locate a good shop. Too many shops--dealers included--just "churn and burn"...they try to get as many cars through while they burn through your cash.

What engine work was done? Not sure but don’t these engines have a balance shaft?

December 2022, P0012 code, so oil changed, code cleared then returning. Took to dearship. Next step should have been check electrical components, check timing, check ECM, check or change VVT Valve $300, dealer went directly to internal engine work replacing VVTi gear $1200, manually cleared code, I noticing vibration upon start up, when picking up vehicle. Dealer insist keep driving ignore vibration, to see if code returned. It did. Diagnostic ticket pulled, advised to replace VVTi gear again plus VVT Valve but ignored my request to replace VVT Valve first, to see if corrects code and no need to do unnecessary internal engine work twice, replacing the VVTi gear first. Code cleared but vibration, idle, RPM and bogging in 2nd gear continue, but since code cleared dealer redirecting attention to engine mounts, which makes no sense. No offer to refund $1200, not following up vibration issues under warrantied workmanship.

I did research and these engines do have balance bars, but not sure how related. I did see the tech taking the cam shafts out of the engine and manually manipulating the paddles but online cam shafts were not removed when replacing vvt I gear. Not sure why he did this if this caused problems. Also stated they cleaned throttle body and if this caused problems. Also nitice dent on engine hood.

This all started in Dec, snd still at dealer weekly, serv mgr saying they have no way to diagnose vibration, idle, rpms, bogging problems except to start replacing parts, another dealer saying the same as new diagnostic computers can't read 2006 tacomas. Dealer did not know how to reset ECM following engine work, said it would automatically relearn and reset idle and rpms, but still vibration, rpms and bogging persist. Dealer said if no codes engine operating within normal parameters. If no codes, can't diagnose problem.

They also addressed a disappearing coolant with no visible leak, at same time (December) I took vehicle to dealership for P0012 code. I first noticed lower collant levels in November. Dealer pressure tested for 10 minutes normal at 15 psi. Valve pressures normal and block test normal. Requested pressure test with boroscope to check for minor drip of coolant into valves (seen on utube) but dealer refuses, stating they won't do boroscope with pressure test unless it had failed pressure test. Will pressure test overnight to see if holds pressure.
Coolant resovoir refilled Dec 14th when tests done, level slowly dropping, resovoir at 1/3 full since Feb 14th.

Called customer service help line, but provide no assistant since work not done under factory warranty. Vehilcle 2006 with 114,000 miles. Dealer upset I called for assistance, and still no offer to refund $1200 for first replcement of vvti gear (no chg for 2nd vvti gear or vvt valve) . I have original vvti gear and wonder if possible to have tested to see if functioning normally, proving replacement unnecessary. Not offering to diagnose vibration, idle, rpm or bogging in 2nd gear as part of warrantied workmanship. No complaints of such problems prior to engine work.

Sold me rear struts at time work done/vehicle inspection noticed a leak, but no complaint of vibration, or riding or handling problems when vehicle first taken to dealership. Engine mounts definately an after thought, redirecting vibration, idle, RPM, and bogging away from wareantied internal engine work. Churn and burn?
