I started googling a healthy max heart rate, because I was curious what the 'experts' claim. Rule of thumb is subtract your age from 220, that's a healthy heart rate for you. What caused me to google this was I got an alert after a ride last week, new max heart rate, 189 BPM! I usually see 180-185 max for short, technical burst climbs and average 140-150 for the full ride, depending on the ride (I seem to be higher on road/gravel).

To be fair though, back when I used to race XC, I pretty much wore my HRM 24/7 to track everything, including recovery. So untethering from the data was liberating.

One of the pieces splintered, since it was jammed tighter than the integrity of that black plastic barrel piece. Good news is the internals rebuild kit is like $28 and will be here Tuesday and will be good as new.

Reading up on potential fixes yesterday, it sounds like its one of those "eh, it happens" kinda things re: dirt ingress/jamming.

I've hit 195 before. I'm in my mid 30's. the 220-age is a guideline. pretty good guideline but not the end all. I am mostly a curious guy and want to keep track of my heart rate on rides os i ahve an HR as well. I can correlate my HR with how my body is feelign now after a lot of riding so I can tell when I should chill out without having to look at the head unit.

I tend to have elevated heart rate on mountain bike rides becuase i'm pushing uphill the entire time. granted, i take longer breaks so i think my average is down but my movign average is definitely higher.

I'm 35 and found that my typical peak HR on a ride is mid 180's. I know exactly when it happens without needing to look at the monitor because things start to not feel OK. I have had bicep pain that shows up and goes away quickly when I slow down, but its a pretty good indicator that I need to take the effort down a hair. The peak HR is always on an extended technical climb - figure if I can speed up and climb them quicker, it still hurts but I don't sit in that 'danger' zone for too long.

My wife would bring me back from the dead to personally kill me again if I had a heart attack on the trails.

Having a hard time figuring out what pedals to use in Utah. I have been on flats all winter and gotten very comfortable with them, but like the assurance of being connected and the benefits of climbing when clipped in. I do not want any slow speed timbers on a technical section because I didn't get out in time, but also do not want to handicap myself on a ride by being on flats. Figure I am going to bring both sets of shoes and figure it out while there.

    First world problems.

haha! Yeah. I knwo when things quickly go wrong when i'm pushing too hard. I can feel redline and know about what hr i'm at. But yeah, typical peak HR is in the 180's for me. typical average is like 150 i think.

depends on what you're riding and what you're comfortable with. I'm a flats guy. so I've only ridden flats on everything, including the gnarliest of gnar out here. But i have plenty of friends on clipless and they love it. I just don't like the idea of being stuck to the bike when i'm doing something realllll sketchy. But others are the opposite, they love the feeling of being connected.

If you're doing the average ride here, flats will do just fine. but if you're hunting the blacks and double blacks, depends on your preference.

220 minutes your age is very much a guideline.

I'm 36. My MaxHR is 201. When I was 16 my MaxHR was 203. I can keep my HR at 180+ for an hour+ relatively easy.

Best way to figure it out is the hard way. Either a short time-trial effort with a max effort at the end or a ramp test.

Heart rates vary wildly from person to person. They even vary in the same person depending on how well trained they are, fatigue, sleep, diet, etc.

I ride flats in S Utah and clips in N Utah. STG and Moab with the extra techiness gets in my head and I feel much more confident in the chunky bits up and down with flats. N Utah tends to be more groomed unless you go looking for the gnar, so I dig the efficiency of clips.

Cool man.The Hardtail Party video had me sold on one, and I haven't heard bad reviews about the Fuse. I had to google what the Pivot Shuttle was... WHAT AN UPGRADE! Cool bike forsure.
Skypark & Summit is the goal later this year, gotta get seat time in!

You know where I'm at. I went for clips last year, but I've been finding that I'm a better rider on flats. I'll take more risks because I know I can get away from the bike. I also watch too many Friday Fail videos where a wipe out was much worse because the rider was clipped in and they scorpioned. I went to flats for the winter and I'll likely continue on flats this year except for road and gravel.

    Flats.
Besides, with a bit more time and practice you’ll feel just as connected to the bike as with clips.
As efficient , no. But you learn to pump and dig your heels to the point where you only become disconnected if you do something silly.

I spent a lot of time on clips, but with the terrain we have in GJ/Fruita (very similar to Moab) I went back to flats on my MTB full time a few years ago. I’m running Peddling Innovations which are really long and put the spindle under the arch of your foot, but that’s a whole other conversation. They have replaceable grub screws in both short and long and I run a combo of both. My 5.10’s stick to them like glue, it’s pretty amazing. Only down side is then you catch one in the shin or calf kinda meat grinderish. I was impressed with them so much that when I built my hardtail I put them on that also. Still running clips on my gravel bike.

Absolutely, especially if the trails ever dry out… we need the moisture, but this winter has been abnormally wet. I’ve tried to get out on the gravel bike a bit, but also putting a lot of time into the my 1st gen.

I definitely wanna hit up SkyPark and Summit more this next season. Went to summit twice on the fuse and it was fun. Got to practice on the smaller jumps and trying not to case. I'm a big chicken though haha whereabout are you in SoCal if you don't mind me asking?

Did you think you were "Ready" for bike parks when you went? I want to go, but am nowhere near comfortable in my MTB. I was thinking starting off at Rim Nordic or somthing... you know.. baby steps. Haha

I'm in the High Desert city of Victorville, and drive out to Big Bear to ride.
