So I had to look. Sure enough... I just put the factory head unit back in a few minutes ago.
    upload_2023-1-10_23-37-46.jpg

    Soooo DA21. So T-SB-0045-22 doesn't list DA21_0166 under Tacoma.
But then on T-SB-0003-20 it does list DA21_0165 under Tacomas.

Looked up the head units for the other vehicles listed. Does look like the same head unit with functions. Possibly just without out the JBL integration. Wonder if it is the same head unit that just sends out the audio signal to the JBL amp and the amp does all the JBL stuff. Been looking for ways to upgrade the sound system without chopping and removing too much crap.

I guess this chart is one way to check it:
So the chart on T-SB-0045-22 would probably say 0166 is safe.

I guess I could try the update from @ktbell444's original post then try out @r81984's updated files and see if it auto selects it.

Since the 19 is listed there and the result shows it should be fiiiiine....
    upload_2023-1-11_0-0-9.jpg

Maybe they added the JBL Premium stuff at the port or dealership before it left the plant?
Then there is always that coding slip up where they coded the wrong stereo into their database. There was a case of that before for something, which I don't remember what it was. But it was something small and stupid. Did you by chance try the 0166 update?

Head unit updates do not need TS. See the 1st Post for instructions.

Edit: My bad. That is a different than these HU updates. I believe that I flashed 2020 Tacos with V14, but that has been a long time ago. See MHHAuto.com for what you need.

That min TS version was in some other TSBs. It didn't affect flashes for the Engine / AT ECUs. I have never had the opportunity to flash anything but those ECUs though.

    Hey folks.
I acquired a 20+ head unit to use CarPlay but it seems the firmware is a non navigational type. I was wondering if I am able to load a navigational firmware version to my head unit?

It probably won’t do any good since you don’t have the hardware for it. Is yours 86140-04230? The Toyota site will point you to the correct/needed firmware for your specific model head unit.
You can try. It might give you an error message….

My previous head unit had navigation. I just stepped up from Entune 2.0 to 3.0.

    And

    Yes it’s 86140-04230

What I’m trying to do is load the navigation app and I’m not sure if that’s possible?

You can use a maps app (Apple, Google, Waze, etc) via CarPlay without having navigation hardware built into the radio itself.

Not certain, but my assumption is the non-navigation radio is missing the physical hardware (GPS receiver, storage for maps, etc) that would be required to use the built in navigation stuff.

CarPlay (and Android Auto) don’t require that — everything including the GPS signal, routing and map content comes from your phone and the radio just acts like an extra screen. Google Maps doesn’t even require a live data connection if you’ve downloaded the maps ahead of time.

Curious, does the newer head unit with navigation come with an SD slot?

No SD slot on my 2021. Maps are stored internally and updated over the air as part of the navigation subscription the truck came with (no charge for 3 years I think?)

Gotcha, I’m going to try to force load a navigation firmware into my unit. Fingers crossed!

Fix issues like the TSB says. Sometimes they can make the head unit a bit snappier.

My 2019 has the older infotainment system, which doesn’t have appleplay or automatic updates. I am not unhappy with its performance, but would appreciate some advice as to how to obtain an sd micro card that won’t blow up the system (Amazon 3rd party sellers). I simply want to update the navigation/map from the OEM 2016) data.

Has anyone here had a similar experience and was able to update to the current year, or 2022?
The Amazon cards are dated, data from 2018.
