Went out for a drive to see....you're 100% right. The dash will show 1-2-3-4-5-6 in S mode according to what you select with the shifter.

It’s just a limiter not a shifter. S4 means transmission won’t shift past 4th gear. S5 trans want shift pass 5th gear. I’m assuming that’s why there is no low gear in shifter cause you can lock it out in S mode

Oh regarding S mode is a limiter not a shifter- while it’s true it’s not like a manual where it always goes to the gear you put it in, it CAN be used as a shifter.
For example starting out in S1, you can drive to a higher rpm and then Shift to S2, S3, S4 etc., if you hold the gear long enough. But if you shift up too soon (too low of rpm) it will stay at the lower gear until you reach the rpm required for an automatic up shift to your S setting, per shift tables I presume.
Similarly you can also downshift say from S5 down through S1 as you slow down to a stop - but again if it’s not within the shift tables it can shift on its own.
I’ve played with all of this, a bit of fun lol.

I run mine in S6 every time I take a long, interstate drive because of the hills. Otherwise it will start walking 6>5>4>6>5>4 on a few those hills if I don't intervene and lockout 5. All that shifting has to be causing extra wear on the parts.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Oh lord.. anyone messing with S mode should sell and just get a manual. Why? Just why? It completely defeats the purpose of an automatic to drive in s

The number changes with each shift, either up or down. That said, I don't think I've ever gone up to S6. I'll occasionally shift to S5, but usually I just throw it back over to D once I'm going that fast.

It will if I leave it in 5 or 6. when it starts walking, I pull it back to S4 and hold it there til I crest the hill. then walk it back to S6.

Your truck is broken, take it back and see if they can fix it, preferably without changing out the transmission. They have been on a roll lately changing those things out.

I can't deny. It would be amazing if MTs had a "fucking traffic mode" like s. But for us.

    You sir win this round.

sounds more like an electronics issue? hope it's nothing mechanically serious

I’m betting my money on your suspicion, electronics or perhaps a connector/switch.

Why? Because it skips the "Learning" part of the transmission. The main advantage to S mode aside from limiting gears, I usually use S5 myself, but it skips allllll the wonky learning crap and operates as a traditional auto transmission. S mode severely cuts down on the early upshifting around town, and holding of 4th on highways when using cruise control. It also eliminates the 4th, 5th, 6th, 5th, 6th, 5th, 4th, 5th, 6th..... gear shifting dance on the highway.

It also allows you to use compression braking when hauling a heavy load instead of riding the brakes.

It's simply another tool in the toolbox available, not sure why you wouldn't use it if it's there. I paid for it, I'm gonna use it.
