I’m new to the community here but just purchased my first Tacoma. It was a used 2021 SR5 4x4. This after owning three Frontiers. The truck was used with just over 11K miles. So far I’m pretty happy though it’s worlds different than my 2016 Frontier. I’m getting used to the acceleration and other features. The Frontier was a 4.0 V6. So I lost a little power.

    What I’m noticing thus far:

Tacoma seems to have a smoother steering control.

Tacoma seems to be a little roomier.

I’m loving features such as tracking the gas mileage in real time.

Tacoma seems a little wonkier in transmission / shifting than the Frontier. It’s going to take some getting used to.

I’m in a mountainous terrain and was freaked at going down a steep grade a few mornings ago to have it hold back massively with revving. Managing that a bit better now with braking / acceleration.

Seems to “take off” slower at red lights / stopping areas.

I bought from a non-Toyota dealership. Already registered with Toyota to track any recalls.

One question I have is if it is appropriate to go ahead and schedule a service and check on the vehicle with the local Toyota dealer. I did some oil changes myself but was always kind of big on letting the Nissan dealership do most services.

I think some of my concerns right now have been in regards to the lag in acceleration and some of the “features” such as holding back down grades. If anyone knows of these features can be adjusted (still going through the info center and learning the ropes) let me know. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy and considering this a learning curve but ain’t much considering looking back. It feels pretty “tough” compared to my Frontier but in more an endearing way.

    Any input is HUGELY appreciated!

    Cade

You’re mad at what’s essentially engine breaking on downhills? Must be a Friday…

If the truck only has 11K on it, I bet it has the remainder of the 2 year 25K service plan (2 oil changes) left on it from when it was new. Take it to your local toyota dealer I bet there is a free oil change waiting for ya, the service goes with the truck not the owner.

Welcome to the forum :hattip: Congratulations on the new truck.

The Tacoma drive train takes a bit of getting used to, the engine has about as much torque as a riding lawnmower at an idle and drives much differently from the older style in line six and V8 engines of days gone by.

This V6 is happy to rev, it really starts pulling above 2000 rpm or so.
Driving became a lot more fun once I got my head around the idea that it wasn't going to blow apart if I wound it up occasionally.
You paid for the whole tachometer, don't be afraid to let it eat. :burnrubber:

the tacoma is heavier, slower, and shifts different but tougher off road and will last longer

    Congrats on an excellent purchase.

Your Toyota will blow away a Frontier in resale & long term reliability but Nissan makes a lusty V6 designed specifically for truck use. If you’re in a hurry you’ll now have to rev it out more, which the 3.5 is happy to do. You’ll probably adjust to the difference in time. Just don’t go looking to win stoplight drag races and it’s smooth & plenty adequate. Good luck!

Use the ECT button. Trust me, you don’t need a lot of throttle to get scooting around town.

Welcome to tw. Kind of makes one wonder at 11k miles why it was already on the market again. Usually if you get a good running truck, you keep it longer than that. My buddy went to a frontier after being disappointed with his tacoma's performance...loves the frontier, so I guess to each his own.
