Body Mount Bushing Install - now with pictures! And a video too!!!

I don’t have a way to scan right now and I work 12 days the next 6 days

 

no way to pull into autozone or oreilly for a minute to just get a read?

 

Maybe in morning but nearest one is about 20 miles away

 

getting a scan would be your best bet as it would at least pin point which wire and where

 

Well I drove to get it scanned and two different places can get any power from my obd2 port

 

Jeeze! The heck happened. Sounds like you disconnected everything right. Assuming you’ve already unplugged em and plugged em back in to just see. Think there’s that big plug next to the passenger ABS too. Check that guy.
If not. May be worth while to just do a reset. Take the ground off the battery and let it sit for at least 30. Will start weird but see if those fix it?

After all this my seatbelt sensor was wacky.

But I will honestly say, my truck has 199k and this bushing upgrade was awesome. When I turn, it doesn’t feel like I’m going to go on two wheels. Very smooth ride. Suuuuuuper pleased.

 

had a blown fuse on obd. autozones scanner wouldnt read abs. did the jumper wire trick counted lights right front abs wire or sensor.

crappy thing is i still have my squeak after all this work lol

And don’t ya freakin hate that? My leaf springs/bushings are squeaking real bad so that’s another project with a whole suspension upgrade when the weather warms. Have something else around the engine bay squeaking too I cannot pinpoint at all…

 

I have no idea where mine is coming from in the front i think. it only really happens in a few spots on my commute to work. some bumps i hit (country roads) dont make the sound. who knows

 

I had issues on the drivers side radiator area mount as well. Passenger side was a breeze. I had to pry up on the body all while pushing the bolt from above and pushing the metal sleeve up from the bottom. I couldn’t get it to fit with the sleeve already in place. It lined up well after that.



The bushing was pretty shot on the side being pinched from it moving that direction. Hopefully the ES doesn’t do the same.

 

Has anybody had issues with the rear body mount bolt being stuck/seized? My rear driver side mount has been the culprit of a lot of clunking. I think it may have like welded itself to some metal in the bushing sleeve or the frame if it wore through enough.

I got the whole front bolt and the rear bottom 17mm nut off fine, I tore the whole back area of my access cab apart again to get to the the top of the bolt and was able to put a breaker bar on the 19mm bolt head and turn it a quarter turn (clockwise) to unlock the wings. And after using a BFH and a really big BFH (Sledge), and even the jack with a nut/socket on the bottom I was unable the get the bolt to pop out upwards. The jack actually lifted the whole drivers side of the truck off the ground. I started soaking all of the bolts like a week ago in PB blaster from the bottom side, today they soaked for like 2 hours from the top before trying to get them loose. I am kinda stumped by this.

Tonight, both rear bolts are drowning underneath like a 1/4” of PB and I am borrowing a torch to try and heat them up from the bottom.

Any plan b suggestions if heat/penetrant doesn’t loosen them?

 

I have a rattle in the back like that. Brutal. It’s never consistent but I’m very sure it’s the lead bushings. Hopefully… if not. I’m stumped.

100% was in the same boat. Passenger rear will probably be very similar… they’re a bear. Period. Soak em overnight. Crank on em. Repeat. What I learned is when you can get the bolt, from the top, to spin 180 and back smoothly, you’re home free.

But literally. Soak. Sit. Crank the bolt (from top is best) back and forth and back and forth and repeat. The part that’s spinning the most is the rubber. The bolt and metal sleeve are seized together and that sleeve is attached to the rubber. So, ya gotta get that rubber to start pulling that sleeve.

Absolutely the biggest PITA upgrade/project I’ve done to my truck…

Plan B. Sawzall. Also. Be prepped for those 14mm. Soak them on all 4 corners of the truck deeply. 2 I had to cut out. 1 snapped completely and the other just never budged.

 

I have done a lot of mods and this has been the hardest yet. I only have 125k miles but that bushing must have been rotted for the last 2 years when I was at 80k so it’s had a long while to get rusty.

 

i did not as mine was a southern truck. but i saw someone using an air hammer to get theirs out.

 

Well that dang bolt turned this whole project into quite a lot of work. It took me 3 whole days to get it all done and put back together.

I tried several methods to get the bolt out, but the solution for me was drilling the head out from the inside so we could lift the cab a little bit. I then took a sawzall and while holding it inside the rear fender, I was able to cut the bolt between the top of the factory bushing and the bottom of the cab. I also had to cut the bottom of the bolt to allow me enough clearance to pull the whole bushing out the top without lifting the cab too high.

I then replaced the bolts with grade 8 7/16” x 5” fine thread bolts with a normal sized washer and a wide/thick washer up top. On the bottom, I had to reuse the thicker factory bushing washer to take up some space on the bolt, so I was keeping the nut in the threads topped off with a washer and a nylock. I did it on both sides.

The funny part is I had the other side knocked out in under an hour.

I will keep it this way for now, but if the rear bolts start loosening I will order some factory bolts with the lock wings.
the ride is nice and stiff now and no more rattling!

If you have the same problem as me you will need some high quality drill bits. I don’t know how many cheapie bits I destroyed because that steel was hardened. Luckily my buddy had a nice set and they chewed through it like butter.

 

I noticed tonight that I didnt hear the noise on the way to work. Im also down to 1/8 of tank of fuel. Any thoughts on the added weight of the fuel causing some of our problems too?

 

Worth a test to see if when you fill up if it comes back. Give it a few tries. Should be ok as long as everything it spec torqued

 

Nope wasn’t that. Lol. But I did try to wiggle around my truck in my dads lift before I raised it and lost my balance and fell towards the hood and heard the squeak. So I put dry lube on anything to do with the hood. And so far it’s quiet but it’s also warmed up today too

 

and don’t think it’s the hood either. I heard it slightly this morning. So I don’t know what it is but right now it’s 33 degrees and the other day when i thought it was gone it was 64 degrees.
