Well an assortment of marine grade heat shrink butt connectors and a heat gun are on order and should be here tomorrow. Now I need to get wire to splice in. I'm not much of an electrician, can anyone tell me by the pics or experience on what gauge wires I need for splicing? The green shit on the harness after I cleaned the nest out is Irish Spring soap. I also bought some peppermint oil and sprayed it all under the hood. My Tacoma is not my daily drive, but it only sits in one place for 3-4 days in a row at any one time. I hate fucking rats!
    Any info is appreciated. Thanks

    Good luck. Dam.
When I bought my trailer in 2020 they offered me some sort of rodent spray for the frame etc. Was an expensive add on so I said no but maybe something to look into.
There is also 12v rodent signl deterrent devices for RVs, again not sure how effective but might be worth a shot to see if you can rig one of those up.

I went through the same thing on my 1st gen. I didn’t drive it much cause I had a work truck. Squirrels were my problem. Besides buying a Gamo pellet gun and scope. I created a bait station, removed screen from window and became a sniper overnight.

Rats are a different problem, you may need to get a plastic container, drill a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in it , fill it with moth balls and zip tie it in your engine bay. Also I used Cayenne pepper and water mixture in a spray bottle. What ever you do, you need to fix the rodent problem, those little critters will drain your wallet with repairs. I periodically still add to my squirrel cemetery and have found out they actually make good tomato plant fertilizer.

I would look into your vehicle insurance policy and see if this is covered. Saves rhe hassle of having issues pop up in the future. Best of luck

Had a squirrel chew threw my abs harness. First time this ever happened. I installed a rid a rat. It’s basically a flashing led that hooks up to the battery. It’s been two years now since install. My truck sat last month because I worked out of town. Truck fired right up.

Excellent point. Repair may likely be covered under your comprehensive coverage. Call your insurance company and check. Only problem is if you have a large comprehensive deductible.

man sorry to hear that, if you get stuck doing the work yourself, I'd use 18 or 20 AWG wire.

After inspecting what I pull out of the beginning of the "nest", I'm wondering if it might be a squirrel. Had small oak tree limbs that looked like freshly chewed off a tree. In any case a damn rodent. I've lived in the same house for 17 years, parking my Tacoma in the same place for coming up on 13 years with no problems.....hoping this is a one-off, but I will be looking into rodent deterrents. Thanks

I like your pellet gun fix for the squirrels....but I'm in a neighborhood, not quite rural enough for this approach.
Moth balls should work for either though I would think.

Not a Tacoma but my daughter has a hybrid and mice got in and chewed the wires, and wouldn't run. Towed to the dealer and insurance covered it to the tune of $3600. There's an after market kit where the sheathing is made with capsaicin for an additional small amount. They wouldn't cover that extra amount.

I once heard squirrels called "tree rats" and I will never think any differently

I had melted wiring on my Oldsmobile many years ago..not from rodents.

Try a local scrapyard perhaps, if you can find one you can just cut the section you need.

I had mice chew through one of my hard plastic fuel lines on my other car. Driving down the road and watching my fuel gauge drop pretty quick along with the awful smell of gas. Just pissing out gas.

    Yeah I hate rodents.

My father in law had rodent make a home in his air box and he couldn’t figure out why his truck was running so bad until he found the nest blocking all the air. I also hate rodents

Honda makes stuff called rat tape, or you can even order capsasin tape, you can re wrap all the wires and it works. Honda made it when they tried to wrap some of their wiring in a plant based wrap that rodents fell in love with. wrapped a few subarus up in it too, from more "rural" areas

We’ve got some serious squirrels up here in the NorthEast Kingdom. I don’t let them near my SR SX though…..CE9984D4-F741-4377-A7B3-F2AF58FAE911.jpg
